NZ prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, chose a classic Women’s Weekly Party Cake for her daughter Neve’s first birthday.

“Doing what so many parents have done before me,” PM Ardern shared on Instagram.

“Waited till baby was up in bed before trying to magic up a passable cake for the big first birthday.”

She also thanked everyone for their well wishes:

“To the many, many people who have wished our family well, sent knitted goods and passed on a piece of wisdom about parenthood over the past year – thank you. It truly takes a village (and someone in said village may get a call if I don’t sort this cake!)”

In a follow up post she shared:

“I may be smiling but about an hour earlier I was not enjoying the first birthday cake making experience (like just about every parent I know!),” she wrote.

“I recommend cakes that you can legitimately cover in coconut – it hides almost everything. Happy Birthday wee Neve!”

Looks pretty good to us!

Did you make your little ones first birthday cake or outsource the job to someone who knew how?

  • WTG Jacinda. I always made a chocolate slab cake and my kids were always very happy.

  • Wow, someone actually making a birthday cake for their child instead of paying a ridiculous amount if money for a professionally made one. It’s not like she can’t afford to lavishly spoil her child, yet she chooses not to, good for you Prime Minister

  • So cute. We loved the Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake book as children. Yes I’ve always made my children’s birthday cake except for this year!

  • A close friend of ours makes her 2 Granddaughters’ cakes. I’m not sure if the are from the same Womens Weekly Book though. I know one of the girls had a racing car track one and a farm one another year.

  • Great outcome – it looks wonderful and those who attended the party would have loved the cake. How wonderful she did it herself.

  • I love it and I’m sure everyone else did too. I’ve made a four poster bed, UFO, football boot, a hockey oval and a ghetto blaster with detachable speakers. I loved making each one (but not at the time) and seeing the smile on their faces made all the swearing and tears of frustration worth it.
