Expert claims people today are naming their kids based on how popular it will be on social media.

Baby name expert Sherri Suzanne, who runs the My Name For Life website, claims parents aren’t going for common names so their kid will fit in, but they’re actually choosing monikers that’ll make them stand out online, shares Yahoo Lifestyle.

In an interview with the Daily Star, Sheri said this year the most popular names on social media are Bentley, Paisley, Eva and Ada, among others.

Sherri explained: “Ava and Benjamin are two of today’s leaders.

“Ava is the influence behind names like Aviana, Avalyn, Eva, Evie, Evelyn and now Ada.

“Parents who’d otherwise choose Benjamin are picking alternatives like Bentley and Benson.”

“I caution parents that in an effort to make children stand out, they can also make it harder to fit in,” she warned.

“Resist picking names that form jokes, puns, rhymes, or phrases that have strong negative associations.

“In an attempt to express individuality, it’s best not to create obscure and convoluted spellings.”

“I think the recipe for success starts with a name that can be said with confidence—such a name can be a time-honoured classic, a trendy Top 10 or completely unique.

“A name for success has pleasant sounds and is spelled logically to achieve correct pronunciation.”

  • I chose names I like, not ones that would be popular on social media, or anywhere.

  • Not something I even had to consider when having my babies. I had a baby name book and went through it circling names I liked, no thought to how popular they were. Happy to say my kids are doing the same. My first grandson is named after grandparents on both sides

  • I think she’s right. We tried to choose names that are “normal”, but not over-used.

  • Names shouldn’t be chosen for drawing attention online. Choose a name you love you’ll be saying it a lot.

  • I sure like a special unique name.

  • I like traditional names. I think some names sound completely ridiculous and is a recipe for them getting picked on.

  • I like unusual names, as in names that originate from European or Asian backgrounds, that aren’t heard that often, but some names that people would come up with just to make it sound cool on social media are just plain weird!

  • I prefer classic names here too.

  • I like classic names, I dont need a way out there name to try and make my child stand out! I think it will just make them be picked on and stand out for the wrong reasons
