Book Week is almost here and with it comes the challenge of finding a costume for the annual parade – we’ve got you covered with our top picks!

Book Week 2019 is just around the corner, with the celebration of reading and literacy taking place from the 17th to the 23rd of August.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Reading Is My Secret Power’ and celebrates the incredible gift of being able to read and enjoy the world of books.

We’ve done the hard work for you, compiling our top picks of creative costume ideas.

Matilda

matilda

She’s the little girl with the incredible brain and an even more incredible heart. Matilda is the perfect choice for this years theme, representing the ability of education to empower children and her outfit is an absolute cinch! All you need is a navy or blue dress and red headband and a couple of books to carry (Roald Dahl of course!) and you’ve got a simple yet cute costume.

Harry Potter

While we can’t give points for originality with this one, Harry Potter is a classic character that isn’t too difficult to replicate! With just a lightning scar, a pair of round glasses and a wand you can transform any outfit into the perfect wizard’s costume. If your child would prefer Hermione to Harry, tease hair into a bushy style and add a wand.

Peter Pan

He is the boy created by J.M Barrie who can fly and goes on adventures to the mythical land of Neverland – if that’s not a secret power, we don’t know what is! Peter Pan is also a super easy costume choice. Just a green t-shirt, green hat with a red feather and dark green or black pants should do the trick!

Room On The Broom

It’s the children’s book that was made into a popular animation, but Room On The Broom’s witch is the perfect costume option for those parents not wanting to buy something especially for the parade. If you have a dress-up box at home, chances are you’ll have a witches hat and cape and be able to put this costume together in no time!

A Super Reader

If choosing one character is just too difficult, a clever mum has shared her idea of dressing her child as a ‘super reader’ by placing images of their favourite books on a cape and putting a custom logo on the front of their t-shirt. We love this idea!! Definitely one worth stealing.
