An easy convenient puree for young children.

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 200 grams pumpkin
  • 1 apple
  • 1/4 cup water

Method

  1. Place the peeled and chopped pumpkin into a saucepan and just cover with water.
  2. Bring to the boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes, then add peeled and chopped apple and continue to simmer until both are nice and tender.
  3. Drain, reserving a little of the liquid. Puree, using the liquid to achieve a smooth, runny consistency.

Notes

  • Apple and pumpkin are a sweet combination. Maybe add peas or parsnip to cut through the sweet

  • Don’t like the idea of mixing fruit with pumpkin, and they can be both very sweet. I think sweet potato is a good option too. Teaching babies to have mono meals they get to learn the taste of individual things rather than mixing up.

  • Pumpkin can be rather bland when cooked on it own. The apple brings out the flavour. They are a great combination, suitable from the age of feeding solids to adults of any age.
