  • Five Star - Family Friendly

Adelaide Shores is our family favourite holiday destination. My parents stay there in their caravan every Summer just as my Grandparents did and now we stay there in a cabin and absolutely love it. No matter what the weather there is plenty to do, no need to leave the park. Very convenient and well located.

  • Day Visit

My Uncle stays there with his family every year for the past 20 years, we were invited to come for the day to have a bbq. I had never been to the park before. It was huge, great range of stuff for the kids to do, the pool was lovely and it was also a really quick walk to the beach. Would love to stay for our own family holiday one day.

  • A holiday that didn't break the bank!

This was one of the best holidays I have had, and certainly the best holiday we have had as a family. Not only did we enjoy a great break the kids found new friends quickly, and played and played leaving us adults in peace for a little rest and relaxation too. We all enjoyed the nearby beach and found the park with everything we needed.

I love the environment so peaceful and calm even when it is busy. Love that it is so close to the beach too. Highly recommend the caravan sites to families. looking forward to going again soon.

  • EXCELLENT

Stayed here twice as part of a school camp and found the facilities, staff, amenities and overall Park excellent. I would highly recommend the cabins as being clean and well cared for and the location handy to central Adelaide. The beach frontage is an added bonus and I hope to return some day soon with my family :)

  • Stayed for a long weekend with 20 friends.

The park offered everything we needed.

We were a group of 20+ Harley Davidson riders.

The location, cabins and amenities were terrific.

The park hosts couldn't have looked after and accommodate us better. They accommodated within the same area and offered great advise on local attractions.

We are still talking about our event and most of us are planning our next one where we will take the rest of the family.

We were all kept in the back nitty of each other

  • ADELAIDE SHORES .... fun, relaxing and

    DAY ONE

I drew back the curtains and was welcomed by glorious blue sky. What a wonderful day to pack the car and head off to BIG 4 ADELAIDE SHORES CARAVAN PARK.

Since we heard that we were the very lucky family chosen to review the BIG4 Adelaide Shores Caravan Park our children have been counting down the days, deciding on what clothes they’ll wear, what activities they’ll be doing, what time we should arrive....you could say there has been quite an air of excitement in our home.

Our family is used to camping and with three children it’s hard work, we usually find ourselves taking everything except the kitchen sink, so staying at Adelaide Shores is the type of holiday I could easily get used to, with only clothes and food to worry about.

We arrived at BIG4 Adelaide Shores early afternoon. Our first introduction was the bright coloured fence that led to the entrance of the park. There was about four cars in the waiting area ready to checked in. This was the first indication that this must be a popular place to holiday. The reception area was neat and tidy, with a selection of DVD’s ready for hire, an area with brochures that offered ideas for places to visit in Adelaide and notices that told you what you could hire for entertainment, ie, table tennis, half court tennis, go karts etc. It all seemed quite informative. The staff were friendly and check-in was easy and straightforward. After the regular paper work we were handed the keys and a map clearly marked where our cabin was located.

We arrived at Sea Breeze 5. This is regarded as a Deluxe Cabin. It has a good size lounge area, a dining table and a well equipped kitchen with all the crockery, cutlery and utensils you’d need. There is a modern stove and cooktop, a large fridge/freezer and a microwave. The cabin has two bedrooms, one with two sets of bunks and the other with a queen size bed. There is a toilet room with a small hand basin and a bathroom with a shower, and for those that love a good full shower head, this certainly didn’t disappoint. Towels are supplied as well as the sample sized toiletries one expects in hotels. An air-conditioner/heater and fan in the main area and main bedroom kept the air beautifully cool. We found the cabin to be clean, freshly painted and well presented, and as a lovely personal touch, there was a complimentary bike/go kart and DVD hire voucher on the dining table as well as a couple of bags of chocolates, resulting in smiles all round.

We were pleasantly welcomed by Nicole who personally came to our cabin wishing us a happy stay.

After unpacking the car, Des and I sat and relaxed with a cool drink as the kids headed off to explore the park. They came back with a list of things they wanted to do, finding it hard to decide what should come first.....the jumping pillow won and they were off again. This was going to be a great weekend, for the kids and for us!!!

It wasn’t hard for me to decide what we should do for dinner.......the cafe won! BIG4 Adelaide Shores has a cafe which caters for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The menu has a wide variety to choose from and is a pleasant change from cooking in the cabin. It caters well for children with a number of selected meals that are ideal for smaller appetites. There is also a ‘special night’ on Fridays with schnitzels for $10 and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays kids eat free with a paying adult. In my opinion this offers great enticements to leave cabin cooking behind. With all this in mind I booked a table for five and at 7.30pm after a short stroll to the cafe I began to enjoy my first ‘night off’ from cooking. The entrance to the cafe has a huge drink fridge, a slushy machine and icecream cabinet. You continue through to the dining area which as adequate tables and chairs and a lounge. The atmosphere is casual and ideal for families. There is also an outside area which I presume is for dining patrons also. We decided to choose the Friday night special, chicken or beef schnitzel with salad and chips. The service was faultless with only having to wait about 5 minutes for our meal. In fact, it gave the kids just enough time to go across to the reception office and choose a DVD to watch after dinner, and in a kids life, that’s important!

The meal was delicious. The plate had been warmed and the chicken and beef tender with just the right amount of salad and chips. All this for $10 each! Great value for a family, and a winner with the kids.

Our first afternoon at BIG4 Adelaide Shores.....full with wonderful accommodation, fun entertainment and delicious food is a great way to start a weekend getaway to remember.

  • ADELAIDE SHORES .... fun, relaxing and

    DAY TWO

No complaints from me! Whenever you have to stay away from home, you always seem to wake wishing for your own bed, but I’ve got to say, I slept like a baby! The bed was so comfortable!

Crispy bacon and eggs on the menu this morning, not in the cafe, but a cabin cooked breakfast. It’s so great to have the versatility of either cooking yourself or going to the cafe. Whatever mood you’re in, it’s your choice!

After breakfast we took a leisurely stroll around the park. We found BIG 4 Adelaide Shores to be well planned. There is a jumping pillow, playground and a new waterpark at the southern end of the park. The new waterpark has just been opened and with jets of water shooting upwards and a bucket that fills and then empties onto eagerly awaiting kids it’s bound to be a huge success. This seemed the ideal play area for the younger children.

Situated in the centre of the park is another playground with a jumping pillow, a half-court tennis court, basketball, two playground areas, a recreation room and two pools, one shallow and one deep. I love this idea. The kids can go from one area to another and then back again. The areas are shaded with vibrant coloured sails which creates a fun, happy and enticing atmosphere.

We were impressed with the recreation room. It’s air-conditioned and with comfy lounges is perfect for parents to watch their kids in comfort. A must when all you really want to do is relax. The recreation room has table tennis, air hockey, a pool table and electronic games ie, driving. For the smaller kids that are just too young for these games, there is a toddlers room dedicated to fun play. Next door to the games area is a TV room. So if you need a little more space and want to watch a movie on a large screen TV this is the perfect place to go. With lounges and regular chairs it’s a comfortable option for families. And of course, if the kids want even more to do, there’s bikes and go karts for hire. My kids hired these and had a ball driving around. You can bring your own helmet or borrow one from the reception area.

Throughout the park you’ll find 11 BBQ and two kitchen areas – and if you want to cook outdoors, that offers ample areas to choose from.

The accommodation at BIG4 Adelaide Shores offers the regular powered sites, but if you want a little more luxury there are powered site with ensuites, your own personal amenities. There are a variety of cabins available, as well as eco tents for the eco-minded. They look lovely, like a house, but made of canvas. There are also bunkhouses available too.

BIG4 Adelaide Shores has thought carefully about accommodation and caters for everyone’s idea of camping, and best of all, they have done it with the campers pleasure in mind.

Not everyone has the benefit of living close to the beach, so if that’s on your list of things to do, BIG4 Adelaide Shores is the perfect getaway. All you have to do is take a short stroll through some sand hills and you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautiful blue water and soft white sand. Take a morning stroll or evening walk or just bury your toes in the sand, the beach is there for you to enjoy.

Explore even more..with a myriad of choices at your fingertips. To the north of BIG4 Adelaide Shores there is Port Adelaide where the ships enter the port and where the maritime history of Adelaide is interestingly depicted in the Maritime Museum. To the east is our beautiful Adelaide city, Festival Centre and famous cricket ground. To the south is Glenelg, a bustling shopping area and if you want to travel just a bit more, there’s McLaren Vale, a growing wine region and Victor Harbour, a seaside town that boasts whale watching and a horse drawn carriage that takes you to Granite Island. There are just so many interesting places to visit.

With a full moon shining, a warm evening breeze, and feeling ready to relax after a full day, we opted for an easy dinner of fresh local fish and chips out on the porch of our cabin. It was the end of a perfect day.

How to choose the best lunch box for school

When you’re searching for a kids’ lunch box, take the time to work out what will best suit their needs. If you make the right choice and invest in a quality one, it will last many years.

  • Box, bento or bag? If your child doesn’t like different foods touching, a bento lunch box is a great choice. Also, think about whether they prefer cut-up or whole fruit; a bento is better suited to cut food, while bags and boxes suit whole fruit. Bags are fantastic if you like to pack separate containers, like smaller bento or snack containers.
  • Freshness is a must – An insulated bag or box will keep everything cool and fresh until snack and lunchtime. But you can also get boxes that come with cold and ice packs. Remember, kids’ lunches often sit at room temperature for up to 5 or 6 hours before they’re eaten, so insulation and coolness are important. Check out how to keep school lunches safe in the heat.
  • Easy-to-clean design – Check if the box is dishwasher-safe, or for lunch bags, if they’re machine-washable.
  • Leak-proof – The last thing you want is a soggy mess at lunchtime, so if buying a hard lunch box, look for designs that are leak-proof with proper seals.
  • Child-friendly – Depending on your child’s motor skills and independence, you may need to start with a product that’s simple to open and close.
  • The right size – We tend to pack way too much in our kids’ lunches, so think about how much realistically you’ll need to pack for your child when choosing the size of their lunch box. You may also need to consider the size of their school bags.

What to put in kids’ lunch boxes

Health professionals agree that kids need a good balance of lean protein, grains, fruit and vegetables throughout the school day. Skip the processed food and try to reach for whole foods that pack a punch in the nutrient department. Here are some great ideas:

  • Grilled chicken or turkey wraps with fresh salad
  • Crackers and vegetable sticks with healthy dips like hummus
  • Whole-grain pasta with cherry tomatoes and your choice of cheese
  • Zucchini slice cut into rectangles for easy stacking in an insulated box
  • Almond-meal slice with raspberries or blueberries – or both!
  • Vegetarian sausage rolls – these freeze well and make a great meat-free lunch when cold.

  • That lunchbox comparison table is handy to have. It helped me make a decision on which lunchbox to buy next for my daughter who is starting kindergarten. I needed to upgrade her lunchbox but wasn’t sure which way to go. The table helped me with my decision. I ended up going with the BBOX and have found a cheaper lunch bag from a department store that it fits in.

  • I do not know if anyone else has picked up on this or not, but every bag mentioned in the table above is a ‘designer’ brand. There are plenty of more affordable options that aren’t over $40. I have never spent that much on a lunchbox – even from Smiggle. The cheaper brands last just as well too.

  • Getting ready for the return to school has started to kick in so this was a timely read. We have the yum box and i love it, it is so easy for my daughter to open and close on her own. I find the lunch cooler bags also a great idea however some days depending on what else needs to go to school, they can be quite bulky to include in the school bag. I need to do some more research this year as i like the idea of being able to watch it in the washing machine, that is a clever idea.

  • Along with all of the other back to school products; there is also a good range of lunch boxes available for people to buy. It has been fun to see the wide range of bottles and lunch boxes that are available for the new year for school and for work.

  • Lunch boxes have come such a long way since my eldest was a kid, he’s now 26! There’s really a solution to everything from food heating, cooling, dividers, pockets etc etc. Lunch boxes are a real fashion accessory and so on-trend these days. I personally love the Bento lunch boxes. They save on plastic and separate different foods.

  • I am such a huge fan of Bento lunch boxes and Bento. Food should be so many wonderful things; including delicious, fun, colourful and nutritious too. Lunch is a favourite meal because the body is ready for some more calories and a boost of energy. Food looks so good in Bento lunch boxes.

  • There are so many great lunch box option out there indeed ! I’ve always liked the Bento style lunch boxes for my kids. It reduces the use of plastic lunch bags and packaged food which aren’t very good for the environment and it encourages to present a good variety of foods (which is not only better nutrition wise but lao to prevent our kids from getting bored with same foods all the time.

  • There are some really fabulous options here. So many variations of colour, shape and size. I love the bento style lunch boxes, so handy to keep food separate and eliminate the use of plastic packaging. The machine washable bags are a great idea too. They can get grubby so fast, this would be so much easier to maintain

  • This has gotten much easier since my kids hit high school – they have strong opinions about their lunch boxes, so I don’t have to think about it so much anymore! However, I am strongly in favor of bento style boxes regardless of their age. They’re easy to clean, easy to pack, and invite appropriate sized portions.

  • Great article! Our kids are so lucky, when it comes to lunchboxes, they really are spoilt for choice. There are so many to pick from. Regarding sandwiches, my eldest son, used to hate sandwiches for school lunches. It wasn’t until many years later that I discovered that he’d throw out his sandwiches in the playground bins. My son’s an adult now and he still hates sandwiches. He only likes “hot” lunches. So glad he lives on his own now and can make his own “hot” lunches just the way he likes them.

  • Wow, lunch boxes have really come such a long way from when I was taking a lunch box to school. Feel old, like “back in my day”, but we were lucky to have options like are available now. While I like some of these designs, I feel like they aren’t super practical.

  • These lunchboxes are beautiful but are they really worth the expensive price tag? I have been through so many lunch boxes and bags over the years and found the best it to use an insulated lunchbox bag with ice brick and use small containers to keep individual items fresh and assessable.

  • I love the bbox lunch boxes. They are so reliable and tough when kids throw their bags around. Easy to wash and store. I have used the we can be tiny snackies at home too. The boys love choosing a certain animal shape. They wash well, are durable and great quality.

  • My kids are old enough now to pack their own lunches and I am so happy to see the great choices they are making. They take left over meals, cook food in the morning to take and now I am confident they aren’t throwing away sandwiches! I do have the chilly bags for them, I find they fit better into bags

  • Love our bento b.boxes. So easy to pack. I do however worry that they’re made of plastic, not metal….

  • My daughter uses a bento box now for work and sometimes an insulated bag in summer, but when she was at school it was a rectangular lunch box with no compartments. It was very easy to wash each day, just the box and lid, and it could still be filled with rolls/sandwiches and snacks.

  • Lunchboxes are so important these days. Back in my day it was a brown paper bag or the exact same lunch box that everyone else had and there were three compartments. Today its such a fashion statement and as much as the lunchbox itself is judged so are the contents.
