  • Good sunblock.

Over the Christmas holidays I have used this kids sun block. it seems to work well. the kids were in and out of the water too, and still they didn't get burnt. also, it seems to be gentle on skin. the children had no skin reactions while they were wearing this sun block.

  • One that works!

Yay! After multiple "battles of the sun tan lotion" I have finally found one that works for Madam! Usually she hates the feel of it before it soaks in, and wants to wash it off straight away, and will cry when I say it has to stay on. This one she runs and gets the bottle herself, It soaked in quickly, and didn't leave a sticky residue. Very happy with Wollies.

  • Works a real treat

Bought this because the packaging was bright and bold and it really stood out to me at the supermarket. It was very easy to use (as most sunscreens are) but it didn't leave an oily residue on my hands after putting it on my son. Would definitely recommend this to anyone.

  • Fabulous to use even my twins enjoy applying it on

The sunscreen is not sticky nor smelly like some I have used. Easy to apply so even my 3 year olds can apply. Great bright yellow packaging to allow product to stand out when in my hand bag. Love this and would definitely buy again as my kids really love to protect their skin from " spots " coz I have freckles and my son always tells me I have spots mum!

  • Great product, great price!

This is our main sunscreen after I saw on a comparison segment on one of the current affairs programs that it rated highly. It rubs in quickly without a greasy residue and I find the older kids can put it on themselves and get a good coverage easily.

They are happy to use it because it's so easy and doesn't have an unpleasant smell like a lot of sunscreens.

  • Great product at a reasonable price

Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30+ is a great sunscreen for the kids. My kids love that when it comes out of the tube its purple, but once it rubs into the skin it disappears with no colour (although some times I think they wish they could draw purple streaks over each other)

It is water resistant which is really important with kids and I have had no skin irritation with my children. We keep a tube in each car and the house to make sure we have it at all times.

    Will buy and use again.

  • Used it over summer!

Over summer we used Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen SPF30+. I found it to be a good product, similar to most other sunscreens at there.

The kids loved using it, I think mainly because it goes on purple.

The price of Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen SPF30+ is fairly comparable to other sunscreens however, I wouldnt call it super cheap.

The bright orange packaging is good, making it easier to find amongst all my bits and pieces and it also demands attention making you remember to apply it!

All in all, Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen SPF30+ fills it job as a sunscreen.

  • does its job

like most mums out there, i tend to test most products that i use on my children on myself as well. i am one of those unlucky (or lucky depending which way you look at it) people with porcelain while skin and i will burn through pretty much most sunscreens on the market. my best tool is just to avoid the sun altogether. i must say after using this product due to my skin (and my first born looking to be in the same boat as i am) i was relatively impressed. it actually seemed to do a far better job than some of the more expensive brands i have used. while i still needed more regular applications than most (thats never going to change), it was the first brand i have used in a while where i did not receive a burn after sun exposure (i tested it a few more times and was sill fine). due to this it is the product i currently use for both me and my children. it is rather competitive on price, doesn't have an unpleasant smell and is non-greasy. i would recommend any mums looking for a cheaper alternative that can still do the job to give this a try and see for themselves

  • Great for taking to the beach!

I always love making sure my kids are lathered up when having fun in the sun. Great for when at the beach, sand doesn't stick to their arms when just lathered the sunscreen on. Its a good cream to keep my kids fairly safe from the sun and I love the fact that it rubs on easily and kids enjoy watching the "purple" sunscreen disappear.

  • not really impressed

tried this when the normal sunscreen I buy was not available, it was not cheap as if I could have got my normal one it was on special and therefore cheaper than this homebrand product, I did not find it as effective as other sunscreens I use, it did not seem to last as long, the kids did end up a little pink with less exposure, I thought it was sticky and took longer to rub in and did not seem to absorb into the skin as others did, I think it probably does the job but other products that are branded in my opinion seem to be better.

  • Happy to Use Again!

Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen SPF30+ is pretty much like other sunscreens. We used the roll on and it was very easy to apply. It's a little greasy but, that's standard, I'm yet to try a sunscreen isn't. When in and out of the water, it last for about 2-3 hours, before it needs reapplying. I'm happy to use again.

I found Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen SPF30+ to be very easy to use. The kids loved the funky purple colour and were happy to slather it all over themselves. Like most sunscreens, it's a little bit greasy but, that's fairly normal. I quite like the bright orange packaging of Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen and it's reasonably priced.

  • Great sunscreen, great price, works well for kids out in the sun

I used the select kids sunscreen on my daughter when we went to the beach and for once she didn't get sunburnt even though we went into the water and she has fair skin.

I love how it comes out purple when I apply it so then I know I haven't missed anywhere, and that's it water resistant.

I also like the price too, because ive paid a lot of money for a different bottle of sunscreen in the past and my daughter still got sunburnt.

I would recommend this sunscreen for mum who love spending time with their kids in the Sun and the outdoors but don't want to risk them getting sunburnt.

  • A gift that keeps giving

Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen SPF30+ was a gift for my son as a beach set with towel, swimmers and the sunscreen from his grandparents. It delivers by protecting my son from the harsh rays of the Gold Coast. I am not sure the price of the item but it is really good quality and I apply to my son everyday and it works.

  • A good sunscreen for outdoor

Woolworth Select Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30+ is a good sunscreen which we brought recently and it is good for outdoor activities, the color is good and no sticky or greasy around, easy to use particularly at beaches and parks.I like the way they have packed it and it is convenient to handle for kids as well, i have recommended my friends as well, the price seems to be reasonable as well and the quality is good, and it last for at least 2 to 3 hrs.

  • Easy to use!

My Mr6 is fussy when it comes to sunscreen. I bought some of this particular one for his swimming lessons toward the end of school. I got no complaints of it from him, and even though he would come home smelling a little of sunscreen, it wasn't as potent as others as well as I could hold his hands without them slipping out out of mine! Great stuff!!

  • Goes on purple

Woolworths Select Kids Sunscreen SPF30 is just like most sunscreens. A little greasy, like most, offering protection for around 2-3 hours. The best thing about this product is that is goes on purple, so you can see where the sunscreen has been applied. It's reasonably priced when compare with similar products.

  • Priced to sell sunscreen but poor quality

I keep sunscreen in the house for anyone, we have a pool so many times people with kids are here and no sunscreen!!, I thought that this would be an economical way of providing a sunscreen for visitors as I have my favourites, however I found it hard to rub in, might as well have covered them with zinc cream, I did not like the smell, and it did not seem to last very long, as in less than an hour, I was very disappointed as most select products that I have used have been of good quality, I certainly would not buy this again and would not recommend it for anyone, especially children who need to be protected, and realistically the price whilst cheaper is probably not cheap enough to counter the poor quality.

  • works well

my son has skin grafts on his arms from an accident when he was younger so sun protection is vey important to us. One of my sons pet hates about sun block is the greasy feeling he is left with on his arms, and there was no complaint from this sunblock and it worked his arms didn't get burnt.

  • Good value sunscreen

As a ranga with fair skinned babes, good sunscreen is important.

I really like that this stuff goes on purple. It's hard to tell where you are up to when applying on a wriggling toddler.

I found it is a little greasy though (as are most sunscreens).

Good size tube to throw in the nappy bag.

Mother’s instinct is a funny thing. At home, we trust it without question. But put us in a hospital setting with an unwell child, surrounded by doctors, nurses and monitors, and suddenly we start doubting ourselves.

What if I’m overreacting?
What if I’ve got it wrong?

So we stay quiet, even when we know something just isn’t right with our child. I’ve been there myself – when my usually ‘tough’ son was doubled over with stomach pain. I was told in the emergency department that it probably wasn’t his appendix. But I knew he wouldn’t have begged me to take him to hospital unless it was serious. Because I know him better than anyone. Turns out, it was appendicitis.

It’s a really common place for parents to land. You’re grateful for the care your child is getting, but at the same time, you feel this huge responsibility to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Here’s the thing though: that instinct you’re feeling? It matters more than you might think.

Why your gut feeling matters more than you realise

According to Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital, Leticia Jackson, parents bring something to the hospital that no test or machine ever could.

“Parents often say they ‘just know’ when something isn’t quite right with their child, and in a hospital, that gut feeling is incredibly valuable,” she explains.

Leticia Jackson, Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital

While medical teams rely on observations, tests and equipment, parents know the little details. The way your child usually smiles. How they react when they’re tired. What’s normal for them.

So when something feels “off”, even if everything looks okay on paper, it can actually be an early warning sign.

“When parents trust those instincts and speak up, this creates a powerful partnership that can sometimes catch a problem before it becomes an emergency,” Leticia says.

Worried about speaking up? You’re not alone

A lot of parents hesitate about advocating for their child.

You don’t want to come across as difficult. You don’t want to question the people caring for your child. And sometimes, you just don’t feel confident enough to push the issue.

Leticia gets it.

“It is completely understandable for parents to feel hesitant,” she says. “No one wants to be seen as difficult or to second-guess the hardworking people caring for their child.”

But here’s a helpful way to look at it: you’re not challenging the medical team, you’re helping them.

Parents are the constant. Staff change shifts, care for multiple patients, and rely on snapshots of information. You’re there the whole time, noticing the subtle changes.

“Our medical team doesn’t view a concerned parent as overreactive, but as a partner,” Leticia explains. “Your voice matters.”

Remember, we know our children better than anyone.

What to do if you’re worried: the Raise It process

If you’re in a NSW public hospital or health service and you’re worried about you or your child’s condition getting worse, there is a clear process you can follow called Raise It.

Raise It is designed to help patients, carers and family members get help fast if they’re worried about a change in their loved one’s condition.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Talk: Start by speaking to a nurse, midwife, doctor or health worker about your concerns.
  2. Ask: Still worried? Ask to speak to the nurse or midwife in charge and request a Clinical Review.
  3. Call: If you’re still concerned, you can escalate further using the Raise It process to get urgent attention from a senior health worker.

You don’t need medical knowledge. You don’t need to be certain. If you feel something isn’t right, or your child is getting worse, Raise It. You just need to speak up.

What should you actually look out for?

Sometimes it’s not one big, obvious sign. It can be small, subtle changes that just don’t sit right.

Things like:

  • Changes in breathing (fast, laboured or noisy)
  • Skin looking pale, mottled, or developing unusual rashes
  • Your child being unusually drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
  • Confusion or behaviour that’s out of character
  • Pain that isn’t improving with treatment
  • Or simply that feeling that your child is getting worse

And sometimes, it’s just that gut feeling you can’t explain.

That’s enough.

“You are helping us, not bothering us”

If there’s one message Leticia wants parents to take away, it’s that you aren’t bothering the medical team, you’re helping them.

“In my years as a Nurse Unit Manager, I can say with absolute certainty that many critical changes in a child’s condition have been identified first by a parent. While our clinical staff are highly skilled at performing regular observations and interpreting data, parents are the only constant presence who truly know their child’s baseline behaviour, personality, and what is normal for them.

“I have seen numerous instances where a parent’s insistence that their child is “just not themselves” – despite vital signs appearing relatively stable – has prompted a deeper clinical review that uncovered everything from early signs of sepsis to a life-threatening respiratory crisis.”

The Raise It process exists because healthcare teams know how important parents are in keeping children safe.

“Speaking up doesn’t mean you don’t trust the team,” she says. “It means you’re partnering with us to make sure nothing gets missed.”

And if you’re still worried about being judged?

“Whether your concern turns out to be something or nothing, your instinct to raise it is always valid.”

  • You should never second guess yourself when it comes to yours or your childs health- or anyones for that matter. Go with your thoughts. It is natural to want to protect a loved one especially when it comes to health situations, and the feeling you get when you think you didnt do enough to advocate or fight for them…it is not a kind or nice way to feel. Many people have ended up being heartbroken and picking up pieces for years because of feeling they didnt do enough.

  • A very good and informative article. I have read so many stories about mums just knowing when things are not right and demanding second and third opinions until they got the right answer. Sometimes mums just know. It is our job as care takers of our families. Listen to your gut!

  • Years ago, I spoke up for my 14-year-old daughter, but my concerns weren’t fully listened to. I’ve always wished I had pushed harder. She was sent home without much testing, and two days later, she passed away.
So, if you ever have concerns—no matter how minor—please speak up and keep advocating. Trust your instincts; they are there for a reason.

  • This is so important for parents to know how to raise it further if they don’t think their child is receiving the medical support they need! I know this article refers to the NSW system but other systems have similar procedures just with different names. I know in QLD it’s called Ryan’s Rule.

    Reply

  • It’s so important to follow your gut instincts and express your concerns indeed. I have never hesitated to advocate for my children in various situations and I don’t care what other people think about it. Not all doctors and medical staff appreciate it when you question them, I’ve experienced that it may result in angry indignant responses.

    Reply

  • How true this is! While nurses and doctors are the medical professionals doing their job on the daily, we know our children better than anyone and what is ‘normal’ for them. I would always speak up if I had noticed any changes in my child’s health and encourage other parents to do so too. No question is silly!

  • This really is such an important issue and a good topic to discuss with people, I am often surprised that people are worried about being judged. This is not something I care about; the priority is for the care and health of everyone is my family. Parents know their children and need to work with health professionals for the best outcomes for their children.

    Reply

  • This is such an important issue to raise, and no one should ever feel ashamed, nervous or that they are being OTT for advocating for their kids, themselves or loves ones in hospital. In QLD we have Ryan’s Rule. A three step process where your concern will be escalated if they believe the patients condition isn’t improving or is worsening.

    Reply

  • I have never been afraid to advocate for my children and partner and extended family and also friends. It is so important to listen and to trust intuition. When people have not listened, I have persevered and kept on with insisting on care and making sure they truly listened and took action.
