Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian have welcomed their second daughter, a beautiful baby girl with a unique name.
The tennis ace, Alexis and their daughter Olympia all shared gorgeous photos of the little one, named Adira River Ohanian. The name Adira is of Hebrew origin, meaning ‘strong’.
Alexis shared a photo of his daughters meeting for the first time with the caption, “I’m grateful to report our house is teaming with love: a happy & healthy newborn girl and happy & healthy mama. Feeling grateful. @serenawilliams you’ve now given me another incomparable gift — you’re the GMOAT. Thanks to all the amazing medical staff who took care of my wife & our daughter. I’ll never forget the moment I introduced @olympiaohanian to her baby sister.”
“Your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.”
Serena Williams’ Epic Gender Reveal
Not long ago the couple revealed the gender of their second baby in a very unique way – using a drone show.
Serena had thought she was finding out her baby’s gender in a more traditional way – with a cake gender reveal, but when she cut the cake, instead of being pink or blue, it was yellow.
Check out how the reveal unfolded (and keep an eye out for Serena’s sister Venus in the background – she’s such an excited aunty!).
Yay! It’s another adorable girl for the high-profile couple!
The pair first revealed they were expecting their second child back in May, in the most Hollywood way possible!
The former tennis ace shared a series of snaps of herself and her husband before heading to the Met Gala, with the caption: “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.”
In one of the photos she’s cradling an adorable baby bump. She then stunned fans at the Met Gala, proudly showing off her second pregnancy. The couple have a five-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia.
Proud dad Alexia also shared the same images, with the caption: “Mama & Papa love this parenting-thing, so we’re back at it ???? and @olympiaohanian is gonna be the best Big Sister—she’s been asking & praying for this for a minute.”
The 23-time grand slam champion played her final match at the US Open last year, with the 41-year-old revealing that she couldn’t balance trying for a second baby with her career.
Serena Williams Chooses Having Another Baby Over Tennis Career
Just before her retirement Serena revealed she was to farewell her stellar tennis career, so that she can focus on ‘building her family’, saying she couldn’t do both.
She said she never wanted to choose between tennis and family, and it’s simply ‘not fair’.
“If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labour of expanding our family,” Serena wrote in an article she penned for Vogue.
“Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital—although things got super complicated on the other side. And I almost did do the impossible: A lot of people don’t realise that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017. But I’m turning 41 this month, and something’s got to give.”
The 23-time grand slam champion admits she had been struggling with the decision to hang up her racquet. It’s something she hasn’t been able to talk about with her husband Alexis Ohanian, or her parents.
“There is no happiness in this topic for me. I know it’s not the usual thing to say, but I feel a great deal of pain. It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that I have to be at this crossroads.
“I keep saying to myself, I wish it could be easy for me, but it’s not. I’m torn: I don’t want it to be over, but at the same time I’m ready for what’s next. This sport has given me so much. I love to win. I love the battle. I love to entertain.”
The athlete admits that early in her career, she never thought about having children, and there have been times that she’s wondered if she should ‘ever bring kids into this world, with all its problems’.
“I was never that confident or comfortable around babies or children, and I figured that if I ever did have a baby, I would have people taking care of it 24/7. I’m not going to lie—I definitely have a lot of support. But I’m also an incredibly hands-on mother.
“My husband will tell you I am too hands-on. In five years, Olympia has only spent one 24-hour period away from me. This past year, while I was recovering from a hamstring injury, I got to pick her up from school four or five days a week, and I always looked forward to seeing her face light up when she walked out of the building and saw me waiting there for her. The fact is that nothing is a sacrifice for me when it comes to Olympia. It all just makes sense.”
Serena admitted that she and Alexis had been trying for another baby in the year leading up to her retirement.
“I definitely don’t want to be pregnant again as an athlete. I need to be two feet into tennis or two feet out.”
