I have been visiting preschools for my daughter to start at next year.
One I visited yesterday, I asked the lady what happens if the child is not toilet trained. She said if a child is not toilet trained by the time they are 3 then perhaps they are not ready to start preschool as they may have a developmental delay. She said legally we can’t say no, but it we have to change a child’s nappy it take time away from the other kids.
I was horrified that she said this. I told her a child will be toilet trained when they are ready and you can’t force them.
Clearly I won’t be choosing that preschool

  • Good on you ! That doesn’t sound like a pleasant type of leadership there.

  • yeah i think that is pretty rude to suggest that there would be a “problem”! kids will do it in their own time! if you rush, you cause anxiety and fear. the kid becomes constipated because they would rather hold on! find somewhere else if possible or you could give them feedback

  • Each kid will be ready to toilet train when they are ready, go with your instinct. I know a lot of kids that were toilet trained from 18 months to 2 years. Mine was only ready and she is three in a few months but I found it was actually easy and it was probably because she was older and actually ready not being forced when she wasn’t good luck x

  • We have 3 year old preschool in Victoria. I’m not worried about her not being toilet trained yet ( we have tried several times) I was more concerned about the teachers attitude

  • Your daughter does seem young for preschool, though. Isn’t four the general starting age?

  • Dont stress the chance our kid will be doing a number 2 in the short time they are at 3 year old kinder is minimal. My son was still in a nappy at the three year old and was only number 2 trained by the time he was in four year old. My other son is going to 3 year old kinder next year and he should be wee trained and hopefully number 2 trained but he will still be wering a nappy just incase. Some kinders say this due to the staffing numbers where it is lower than in some other classes, but that is due to the other classes having more kids in it. As you said kids will be ready in their own time.
