Hello!

My poor Nan (85) has had a terrible time with constipation over the years. She has been having a bad time lately. Every time she went to the doctors, they gave her more laxative.

I took her to a different doctor on Saturday as she had not done a poo for 19 days.

Within 5 minutes of seeing my Nan, the doctor has called an ambulance. She was horrified at the state my Nan was in. She looked about 8 months pregnant her stomach was that distended.

She had a scan at the hospital which showed what the doctors have told us is a “Massive Aggressive Tumor” in her abdomen. Because of the time of year, we are finding it really hard to get answers as to what it all mean.

The hospital is being wonderful but they cant seem to find specialists and surgeons who are available and the ones that are available, don’t want to take the risk with the surgery. The tumor is pushing on the bowel, completely blocking it. She has a tube going down her nose that has sucked a lot out of her, she is more comfortable because of this.

The worst part is not knowing whether is cancer, what kind, prognosis etc. She is not scared of dying. She is scared of being in pain, losing her dignity and not having quality of life. The last 3 days have been horrible.

  • So lucky you thought to get a second opinion. I hope you do not ever return to the first Dr she was seeing

  • My Nan went through something similar when she was in her 60’s and she lived with a colostomy bag for nearly 30 years. As long as your Nan has people who respect her dignity, and she has (and asks for) adequate pain relief, I hope that she’ll be fine.

  • Found a surgeon who will put in a colostomy bag so she doesn’t have the tube down her nose.
