From what I have been told the cost of accomodation, food, sightseeing etc. is a lot more expensive than others. I know somebody who worked in New York for 12 months. She wasn’t on a high income, was very frugal but found it hard to save money. You definitely need to do some research. Perhaps see some travel agents and see what information they will give you. Make it clear you are only making enquiries the first time you visit each one and make it clear you have to sort out a budget.

It all depends on how frugal you are and what activities you plan on doing. I always make sure I have more money that I may actually need.

I think if it was just spending money i would take at least $200 a day for the both of you ($100 each)

I found that a helpful rule-of-thumb when traveling is to allow $100 per person per day for spending. That doesn’t include accommodation or flights, that’s a base amount to cover food, sightseeing and buying bits & pieces. Some days you’ll spend more, and some days less, depending on where you are and what you’re doing. Always have some “spare” cash on a Debit card for emergencies though.

It depends a bit on exactly where you’re going and what you’re doing – shopping in New York would cost more than fishing in Milwaukee, for example. I think I’d work out what I could afford, and make that accessible by an eftpos or credit card, rather than take cash.

I was suprised at how much cheaper america is then australia! And the food servings are huge, you can probably share alot!
