When my children were a couple of years younger, so about 6 and 9, we took them to a working dairy farm. There were cows being milked, young animals to pat and we could have a walk around the farm, enjoying the sunshine.
Suddenly my husband and I noticed a few people stopped and pointing and we wandered over to see a cow on the ground about to give birth. I was totally in awe of this moment. It is so much a better moment to witness it in front of your eyes rather than seeing it on TV. I had the children there….there was some difficulty and the farmer came over with ropes to tie around the calf’s legs and pull it out….and after a few sickening moans from the cow and a great pull by the farmer, there was a new born calf! As the mother started to lick her calf clean and it became obvious everything had turned out well, I wiped the tears from my eyes and turned to hug the children. They weren’t there! Apparently bored by the whole thing they had found another cow to watch which to them was more fun. Why? It was doing poo mummy!
