Hello!

I am a step mum to a 7yr old girl.
my partner wants to have more children.
i would love to have a baby with him as well.
here is the catch.
i have mental issues, depression, anxiety, ptsd and a history of self harming.
i am afraid that with the history of post natal depression (as well as other mental illness) in my mums side of the family that i would not be able to handle pregnancy and being a mother to a new baby.
My partner has the same fears.
Maybe i shouldn’t have kids at all.

  • This is a big decision only you and your husband can decide on. You need to talk to your GP and physcologist or physciatrist if you are seeing one. If you are taking any medication you need to find out if you need to change it before you get pregnant if you can. You may have to be weaned off one batch of medication, introduce a new one and see how well they work.

  • It’s good that you are looking at everything before just jumping straight into it, more people should be like you. Maybe seek medical advice to see what options there maybe, it might also give you a clearer mind to decide and be content with your choice

  • talk to your doctor and counselor. if you do decide to have one, make sure you have the support during and after pregnance

  • This is a reasonable fear, but with help you might be ok. Talk to your GP.

  • Maybe talk this through individually and with your partner with the support of someone with knowledge of these issues; they can often help with planning and strategies.

  • Wow that’s tough! Have a long talk with your doctor they’re probably best able to help you. If you do go ahead be really honest with your midwife and ask for all the help you need .Goodluck

    • Yes, if you go ahead with a pregnancy be as honest as you possibly can.
