Hello!

After two children, I wanted to get back in shape. I signed up to a 60 km walking event and completed that with flying colours. But my stomach is still soft and not toned. I miss my pre-pregnancy belly.
It is not just tardiness as to why my belly is not toned.

I developed asthma in pregnancy, which lead to excruciating rib pain that was diagnosed as a umbilical hernia. This was confirmed by a GP who referred me to a surgical clinic which put me on the waiting list for a hernia operation.

For various reasons, I was unable to go ahead with the surgery. I was referred to another hospital to the surgical clinic. Then I was told that it was not a hernia, it was muscle separation and that only time and exercise would take care of it.

I am at a crossroads. Do I get a third opinion or do I live with the fact that I am unable to do another sit up for life?
I miss that pre-pregnancy belly…

  • Get a third opinion, it is your body and your health.

  • I would get another opinion but if it is muscle separation you can get exercises to get them back together. My sister in law did this and through the exercise managed to get her muscles together

  • I think you need a third opinion, because hernias can be serious and need treatment. But comfort yourself that most people are a bit flabby in the tummy after babies.

    • Always seek more opinions until you are completely happy.

  • Good for you trying to get back in shape. I’m sorry it has been a tough road for you.
Have you though about seeing a physiotherapist? They should be able to give you some excercises that can help tone your tummy without involving sit ups
