I have shared custody of my niece as my brother is in prison and her mother is a drug addict. I also have an 18 month old. It is tough some days but it’s also very rewarding. I can’t understand how her mother can choose drugs over her, she has another couple of older kids not to my brother that she hasnt has since they were babies either. Some people just shouldnt be allowed to keep having children. It is so ridiculous and makes me so sad.

  • addicts are shells of human beings. Their personalities change and i bet that they love their child- no doubt!- but the addiction has warped their priorities and they are not themselves! They have a problem. I hope that the mum will get clean now that she will have a motivation to do so. It is not easy for you, i bet but i hope that they come around and sort it out. Just keep doing what you are doing and i hope that you are able to help guide them along the right path. It will be a battle but don’t give up! that little girl is relying on you. :) Hats off to you though. A lot of people wouldn’t have stepped up the way that you have!

  • yeah at least she has you! you are probably the only person showing her what a normal person’s life is like!

  • It is very sad, but there’s not much we can do about it.

  • You are a good person and your niece is lucky to have you

  • Good on you for caring for this child and giving her the support and care she will need throughout her life.

  • Luckily that you help out. This little girl deserves some happiness. And being surrounded by people that really care about her.

  • What a tragic situation for all involved. You are fantastic for helping out and caring in the ways that you do. It is unfortunate that not everyone who has a child has the capacity to look after them.
