I am really struggling at the moment with Parents getting their p plater children to pick up their, mine and other kids with no permission from parents. Just a quick phone call to ask if it is ok is all it needs. My child the other day was going to a friend straight from school and their learner driver drove. I feel this is putting other peoples kids at unnecessary risk and it makes me cross as if I knew I would drive them myself to their house. Am I being over protective here? What is your view on this?

  • I actually thought the L plater would be safer because you need to have an adult in the car supervisorsing . With P platers , my daughter and her friends had their license at similar times. In fact , I think it is safer if they drove after they had their lessons and exams straight away as the lessons they have learnt is still fresh in their heads. Also I tend to be more wary of boys as I think they may speed more . So I think maybe tell your kids to tell you if they are getting lifts from such n such if this is a concern for you . My daughter is on her green P’s and her and her friends need to help each other as she uses my car anyway .

  • I’d have a problem with a learner driver.

  • I guess these parents don’t think it is an issue. It is your issue so you need to bring it up with them.

  • well a learner would be safer as their is an adult directing them but i understand your fear as a p-plater is still somewhat unexperienced.

    • not sure if they are safer as they have much less experience and yes good to have parent in car for guidance but the parent is not the one with the foot on the break pedal if needed!

  • I think for me this would depend on who it was. If I knew the parents and P plater it would be fine. In saying that I am very careful of anyone driving my children (I have friends that I will not allow to drive me children anywhere)

    • I am with you on that one; it is the discretion of parents.

  • It is an interesting issue as regardless of status; L plates or P plates or full licence some people will always drive in an appalling manner. Others should seek permission from you and you should check with them too. There are some people that I definitely say no to and they have a full licence!

  • No way to a L plater and to be honest I would judge the P plater case by case, some we have said yes to and others my daughter has said I am never driving with them.

  • It’s a tricky one. I’d definitely object to an L plater, but I think it would depend on the person whether I objected to a P plater.
