Hello!

We have purchased a GPS but we still use our book of maps as the GPS can be wrong at times! We were being directed to a very dangerous road because the route was quicker, it was full of dangerous bends and drops and was way off the beaten track! We still use the GPS, but also check the maps just to make sure we are on a good road. It may take a little longer, but is better for the nerves!

  • gps doesn’t always work out the best route for you but you can check the route that it will use and modify if need be. i have all these options and more just using the app on my phone so no doubt that a $800 navman, wouldn’t have the same features. Play around with it for a bit. You can add stops along the way and plan the whole trip if you wanted. I had friends that got a big detour through a national forest, trying to get where they were going. An extra hour for nothing. But look at your system and get familiar with it.

  • The only time we used a GPS was when we drove from Tullamarine to Wagga Wagga. It was great to get us around there. But on the way back to the airport, there were so many roads to turn onto from the main road, it was hard to discern which one the GPS meant. As a result, we got lost. Luckily we weren’t far from the airport and it didn’t take much to get us back on track

  • We started using GPS when travelling in Sydney and just love it. We now only have GPS in car. Its never been problematic. They self correct anyway, so if you don’t like a corner it has taken you to, go your own way and it will adjust route accordingly – I really like that feature!

  • We don’t have a single map book anymore so rely on the GPS on our phones. I get very sick reading in the car so I’m useless to my husband if I had to read a map and direct.

  • Yes, we find GPS good for suburban trips, but not quite so reliable for other trips.

  • I always preferred the book of maps. But now that in my smartphone I’ve got Google Maps that talks… I find it so handy! :-)

  • I’ve been reading maps for years and prefer maps

  • The only reason I prefer GPS is because (most of the time) it seems to be more accurate than the book of maps.

However if you are using a phone/internet and go into a “no service area” it will make you wish you had a hawk trained to follow the brightest star to get to your destination

    • LOL! Love your hawk comment – very funny!

  • I like the GPS that can be customised with different voices.
