The other week my 4yr old son was running around playing with his 2yr old sister, she hadnt slept all day and he was trying to entertain her while i was organising dinner. He ran past me then my 2 yr old followed him, when i hear a scream and cry like iv never ever heard before. I ran into the play room and look down to my son laying on the floor rolling around and my 2 yr old trying to comfort him. I thought ohhh he has just sprained it it will be all ok tomorrow.
So after a few hrs of ice pack and first aid, he fell asleep after dinner, not wanting to move much as it was too sore.
Later that night he woke up in so much pain i popped him in bed with me and he went back to sleep. The next morning, still the same thing, in pain but not as much, couldnt move his foot.
After a few more hrs i thought nahm this isnt right. So off to ED we went…… 7 hrs, not many people in the waiting room, a sore 4yr old and a screaming 2 yr old…. yea was a great day all round….. NOT.
Finally get looked at to be told it sounds like a sprain, go and get a Xray and come back. We do that…… have a look at xray to be told that the hairline fracture is a VEIN….. ( 3 drs looked at it….. im fuming)
Anyways we get sent home as they were certain it was a sprain. the next morning i thought nah its not right hes in pain still…. just as i was pulling into ED i get a phone call from the hospital sayin that it is actually fractured and that it needs to be plastered. well….. they didnt like me at all after that. 4 drs and 2 days of pain they put him thru.
hes on the mend now but still have to have checkups and another 3 weeks in plaster.
went to visit our family dr and saw the reports saying that they had put on the report that he was a girl. Like OMG!!!!

  • I have talked to the person in charge as when we went for our check up they were concerned that i was going to sue them, not that i would have. but they wanted to see how i was and make sure it never happens again.

we have another 3 more weeks in a cast then it comes off just in time for start of Term 2. Tho my little man will be super sore as his knee hasnt moved for 6 weeks by then,,,, fun times ahead.

Thank god i can come and vent and tell my story on here lol.
The other closest hospital is 2 hrs away so not really a short trip. had to use that hospital…

  • may be an idea to write to the hospital/medical area of the mistake with his gender, the stress relating to the incorrect report then being told after so many days that there was a fracture, who didn’t read the report correctly why did this happen, the radiologist should have been more thorough with his report plus the professional doctors who looked at the film, if the hospital needs to improve on their services only by hearing of these incidents things may improve

  • So glad it was found in the end – when mine had a similar fracture OI was told all ok, but a call back on the same day (only a few hours delay). It’s terrible when this kind of thing happens. The wrong sex on the report os NOT ok at all, just like the rest. Hopefully there is another hospital/emergency option in future? If not, at least you aware of the need to follow up your concerns!

  • Hey,
thanks for the replys. Hes ok, its been 3 weeks in a plaster and hes getting over it fast…. bored of not doing the fun things we usually do, tho i have tryed to make it as fun as i can. Another check up this week so this should be a fun…. not…… day. Have to have another xray to see how its healing then chat to the dr. i just cant get over how they can think a fracture was a vein….. like seriously…. veins dont show up on xrays. and for him to be in so much pain and deal with it it was unbelievable. i should have done more but as i look back now i think the hospital staff should have picked up there game and did more than to send us home and tell me to keep icing it.

  • What a nightmare!! Why was it so difficult for them to see the fracture? I’m sorry for your child. I hope he’s not too bothered by the plaster!!
