Why do people feel the need to tell lies? I’ve worked out 2 reasons as to why they lie. 1 to get themselves out of trouble and drop someone else in it. 2 or just cause trouble for someone. Why would you want to do that?! It’s so much easier, and makes life so much nicer for everyone, if we could all just tell the truth. Lies are so destructive, people’s lives can be destroyed by a lie. I know, it’s happened to me

  • A school friend of mine ‘s older brother was heavily involved in a particular sport. While he was competing a girl sitting behind my friend and her Mum was bragging about going out with the competitor, saying she had been out with him the night before, even stating what they alledgedly did anf what time he alledgedly took her home. My friend wanted to tell the girl and her friends that she was lying but her Mum told her not to say anything. The thing was he was home playing cards with his Mum and sisters.

  • I can’t see the point in lying unless you are protecting some-one’s feelings.

  • Sounds like you were hurt pretty bad by one or more lies. hope you manage to find a supportive, sound and truthful friend base to rebuild your life. good luck.

  • I came across a lot of liars too. I remember one classmate in high school. We’ve heard so many lies from her, that we just couldn’t trust her anymore. She had problems of self-esteem, and was going around saying that she went out with a famous footballer for example. The lies were one way for her to create maybe the life she wanted and she didn’t have. The problem was that this way she couldn’t make any friends.
I find really terrible when people lie to get out of trouble. Or they even pass the guilt to someone else. This way you show no respect for others. And those lies can have so many hard consequences.
I’m sorry for your bad experience!

  • I agree; it would be lovely if everyone just told the truth. Unfortunately I think it is almost human nature to lie, largely for the reasons you mentioned.

    • I agree – it is a trait that some people display more than others. Learning how to spot lying is important.

  • I agree lying isn’t the right thing to do specially in the context you are referring too, however…I’m guilty of telling lies, not being honest or telling that little white lie eg when your child makes/gives you a “beautiful” gift, your husband asks you how much your dress that “you got on special cost” ,the dinner your friend cooked “was delicious”. These are the lies I’m happy & morally feel ok to tell.

  • People lie for so many reasons and apparently it can start when children are little. Children may lie out of fear of getting into trouble. However, people do need to know the difference when they are grown up. Lying is not OK and can be so destructive. It does take courage to tell the truth, but being authentic and honest is the best policy.

  • I don’t like it either. Honesty is always best. I think some people lie to make themselves look better . Others do it to Hurst people. it’s horrible

  • I do not like lies either and I can’t understand why some people just habitually lie. I find it easier to just tell the truth all the time; then you don’t have to remember what your lie was and to whom you lied to. Life is complicated enough without adding lies to it. Lies also bring about a lot of hurt, misunderstanding etc. I am afraid some people just lie all the time; so much so that they start believing their own lies. Remember the wellness lady that misled everyone about her having cancer. Delusional and hurting so many people in the process, friends, family and people who followed her cancer advice. Truth is the only way to live.
