My husband & myself are Carers of our 2 grandkids .Since our daughter got mized up with Drugs at 15 she’s not able to care for them . it’s hard putting our dreams aside to look after our Grandies 13 & 5 ,now The eldest has been with. Us since a baby as too the 5 yr old .
No way could we see them in welfare ,as hear such heartbreaking stories .,yes some Carers are brilliant but we couldn’t risk them being a number on a government list .So here we are Loki after them till there read to move into there own home one day .
It’s been hard road but to see them grow healthy ,happy & loved .Sadly being drug babies they have problems ,but we don’t get help with this Got told by Pediatrician to deal with it ! I’ve had broken windows ,thing thrown at me .& we can’t get any help from Family S A ,seem to pass the buck ….
I just wanted to share as there is lots of us Grandparent looking after there Grandies ,darn drugs wreck lots of lives ..But we have to look out for the children as they are our future !

Very touching and I take my hat off to you. They are lucky they have you. Im very surprised families SA offer no support, we have DoCs in Nsw and organisations like Barnardos to support people like yourself. Docs priority to keeping families together so they opt to place children that have been removed from care with grandparents, aunts, etc. I would have thought there would be something they could offer

Bless you for taking care for your grandchildren so lovingly !! Sorry to hear about the problems due to drugs use and the little help you get with that ! Me and my husband also have 2 foster children in our home from which the parents used drugs, a 5 year old girl and a 20 month old girl with Down syndrome. Our own kids are 9 and 11 years old, so it’s hands full but has been so rewarding.

Good on you for stepping in as grandparents, they are lucky to have grandparents. Maybe look into supports again.

What a wonderful person you are to take on your grandbabies to ensure they have a loving environment to grow. It must be so hard but hopefully you are looking after yourself too. All the best. You are an inspiration!
