Hello!

Next time docs tell me an operation has low risks I’ll be sure to still take that risk seriously. My little 3year old Bub had tonsil and Adnoied surgery which is very common surgery with our surgeon telling us they do about 50 a week. As with all ops there is always risks involved but we were told that risk of bleeding and infection is extremely low (5%) and I hate to admit it, I brushed it off but unfortunately Within 5 days of being home and hubby and I thinking his on the mend he had sever bleeding and was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery. Thank goodness he is now 2 weeks post op and looks like his now on the mend but the next time doctors tell me about the low risks involved, I’ll make I take them seriously and be prepared.

  • You hear of the occasional case of very mild bleeding, you never expect anything like your little one had. For the first couple of days they used to give patients soft food which gave your throat a chance to start to heal. They don’t seem to do that now. I would be concerned that you child may have a blood disorder. It was after surgery that a blood disorder was diagnosed for a relative of mine. Some can be genetic but necessarily in every generation. Infection after tonsil surgery seems to be more prevalent in adults than children even if very strong anitbiotics are given. I know an adult who developed an infection a few days after starting the course of antibiotics. He expected to have a sore throat for a few days. What he didn’t expect was to not be able to swallow even thin soup or cuatard.

  • What a scary experience! I’m so glad he’s doing ok now. I know what you mean, I often don’t think about the side effects and assume it will be fine.

  • All operations and procedures carry risk – as does every anaesthetic and every other part of the operation. We are so very lucky to have high quality medical care and medical staff throughout Australia. I know problems arise, and that not all areas have the same access to medical staff and equipment (especially in regional and remote areas), but generally speaking, things are pretty good.

  • Sigh! Every operation brings some risks, that’s for sure. I can imagine the scare you had with your little boy. Nice to hear he’s doing well now. Wish him all the best!

  • Glad to hear you little one is getting better, As you said they do a lot of that kind of surgery and sometimes you can be one of the few thats badly affected afterwards with scarey issues. So glad you were able to get him back into the hospital and get him treated quickly…

  • Glad your little one is recovering, very scary for all. Every procedure/surgery does carry a risk, it is tough stuff for parents.
