Many people I know do not celebrate this day. Do other mums have alternative plans for Melbourne Cup Day?

  • I’d never heard of this day when I moved to Australia and could not believe the fuss that was made, even outside the state where the race was held. What annoys me is that the children’s school virtually stops for the day: classroom activities include watching the race, making hats, having pretend bets, playing jokes, there is a fundraising meal for parents (who have to dress up) and such a fuss is made over nothing. The betting is also a real disappointment since so many people loose out.
