I’d never heard of this day when I moved to Australia and could not believe the fuss that was made, even outside the state where the race was held. What annoys me is that the children’s school virtually stops for the day: classroom activities include watching the race, making hats, having pretend bets, playing jokes, there is a fundraising meal for parents (who have to dress up) and such a fuss is made over nothing. The betting is also a real disappointment since so many people loose out.

Seems that less and less people celebrate this day.

I don’t celebrate it either.

I donate money to animal welfare.

No – mostly be ause I never remember till the day arrives.

For ethical reasons I do not celebrate and it will be just another average day around here today
