Hello!

I have a niece who recently turned four at the beginning of the year she decided she was boy and renamed herself Bob (after Bob the Builder). Her older sister who is eight and very much a girly girl cut her hair short for her and she refused to wear any skirts or dresses or anything that is pink or purple as they are for girls. Her mum has gotten her some boys clothes as hand me downs from friends and if you didn’t know otherwise some days you’d think she was a boy. :) It’s funny as she still answers to her real name as well as Bob, how much of a boy she is depends on how she’s feeling. Apparently her mum did a similar thing and is now very girly so we’ll see how long it lasts. :)

  • I love that this is written as a fun story, as it is just that and not something to be worried about.

  • Love the fact that they are letting her do it. I have a another friend that had a daughter trying to do the same thing but they will not let her. They tell her to get over it and no you are a girl not a boy . Have forwarded this to her as a thought for her to think about. Thank you so much for sharing this

  • Children enjoy exploring various roles. I have worked in Child Care and the children are not directed into any gender roles, they decide this themselves.
The gender roles are no different to the children who want to be a fireman, a nurse, a racing car driver or a princess etc. regardless of their gender. Some decide only to change their name because they like a different name.
They possibly have been influenced by a movie, a story or whatever and so decide this is something to try on. It is not to be discouraged because then the child will perceive that there is something “wrong” with them. Not all children will want to be known as of different gender, just like not all children have an imaginary friend, some do and to the child this friend is very real. Some have believed they are from another planet and insist upon this. The fantasy world of children is wonderful to observe and actually enables them to make some sense of this crazy world we all live in.
