I enjoy reading parenting books and Dr John Irvine has always been a favourite. The books are easy to read and the advice is sensible and practical. Do you have favourite parenting books?

  • yeah everyone has an opinion on raising kids. it is great to seek out advice but ultimately, do it your way!

  • I enjoyed reading them but found I was left with a brain overload of information! It’s good to have the advice, but it’s hard to choose which is the right advice if you read too many parenting books. I tend to just muddle through on my own and work things out

    • yeah i find that i love the real experience from the real mums! don’t be afraid to use this site to ask the mums advice! it is practical and tested vs generalised opinions on raising kids. What works for one family might not exactly work for yours.

  • My daughter is 13 years old now. When she was younger I enjoyed reading Steve Biddulph’s books. Very inspiring I think. I like Laura Markham too. http://www.ahaparenting.com/ Here is the link to her work, if you don’t know it. It’s all about Peaceful Parenting.

    • Thank you for taking the time to provide a link. Sometimes we have to look outside the square with parenting techniques, especially if you have a child with extra needs. I’m always looking to try different techniques to see what works the best. Sometimes what works one week will be a totally different ball game the next.

      • Indeed. It happens so often. We need to be flexible and be ready to experiment something new when what functioned till yesterday, suddenly doesn’t bring good results anymore.

  • Yes, parenting books are a bit of a comfort to read. I used to read the Super Nanny books – they made my parenting skills seem great..

    • I have seen the Super Nanny shows – they were interesting.
