Hello!

Just a word of warning to other mums out there. We had occasion to take my grandson to catch a bus at Roma Street Station in Brisbane.
He is a young person and needed assistance to Find the buss purchase his ticket etc.

we duly entered the parking building which incidently had no tarrif signs on view, parked our vehicle and proceeded to the bus.

We put the boy on the bus than proceeded to let family know he was on the bus and returned to the car.
20 minutes had gone by, we searched the carpark we were in to find the pay parking meter and couldn’t find it we returned upstairs and asked a cleaner where it was. we were informed it was three floors down and outside.
we finally found it. time in building 30 minutes

I duly inserted ticket and the fee came up as $30.00 thinking there was an error with the machine i i cancelled it and pushed the help button.

I informed the gentleman?????? who answered that i thought the machine was wrong and he said “NO THATS RIGHT” when i queried the amount was informed that the longer i stood there and questioned him the more it would cost me and to read the fees on the lower right hand side of the machine.

I did this and when i re entered the ticket he was right it cost me $31.50 .

I was shattered as there were no fees and charges displayed in the entry area.

I wanted to warn everyone so they don’t get cught like we did!

  • You could write to them and keep a copy or if you have a computer send them an email and don’t delete it in case you need it for further reference. Is it worthwhile you ringing them? If you do get the name of the person you speak to, ask for the name of the Dept. they are in and write it down. Also write down the date and time you spoke to them. If it is run by a Govt. body and you speak to somebody ask if they can give you a reference number. Our Shopping Centre at West Lakes, a suburb of Adelaide now has boom gates which I presume means you pay for parking there too. When the AFL played across the road, fans were using the car park and it meant shoppers had problems getting a park so they started charging for parking. I am not sure if people got free parking or a refund if they did shopping, not use the parking for football.

    • Good points JUNE11; maybe the ‘poster’ should try this?

  • Highway robbery isn’t it! I loathe parking fees.

  • Ridiculous!!! Bloody highway robbery these car parks, so sorry you went through that.

  • Thats awful but doesnt really surprise me to be honest im finding nowadays you cant park anywhere without being charged a stupid amount.
I paid $19 to park in a wilson car park in Adelaide for 55 minutes on a sunday was so annoyed because it said on the payment board that it was $10 but because a football game was on all car parks turn into a “event carpark” and the daily charge is $19 regardless.

  • That’s seriously crappy.. They need to sign post very clearly where the pay station is.

  • That is beyond a joke. If you get no joy from the company that runs the carpark (and it sounds like you won’t), I’d definitely be getting on to Consumer Affairs department in your state government, and I’d also ring ” Today Tonight” or “A Current Affair”. Usually when t.v. shows get involved, the company that’s ripping people off, backs down really quick & says “Oh it was just a misunderstanding”, etc.

  • Disgusting that it wasnt signed properly. Parking fees in the city are a rip off. I guess they justify it because the demand is there. Still terrible.

  • brisbane is so bad for parking!! i got stung with $70 and i was only in there an hour to pick up my wedding dress! I couldnt believe it

    • sounds like you parked in the same place as I did. Maybe its worth our while getting in touch with fair trading to tell them of the non existence of the fee boards.

  • That’s outrageous for parking at the bus stop!!! I got caught recently at the Zoo :( It’s unfair that there is not enough signage around.

  • That’s terrible. I think the cost of parking should be reviewed, Costs like that are ridiculous.

  • we found this out when we were going to the Hospital to see my Mum and to have meetings it said so much per hour or part there of and it also stated there was an all day fee but with no amount at all and we had not control over when the doctors were showing up and not all 3 were at the same time 9.5 hours past and we were still waiting for the first doctor by the end with our petrol to get there and back it was a $190.00 day for one visit. Thanks to the doctors

    • Hospital surrounding car parking areas are ruthless and it is so bad, given the reason why most people would park in those areas. My son was sick and in hospital a lot when he was younger and fortunately the staff on the ward the last couple of times told me about a scheme they have where they provide you with a ticket and you either don’t pay or pay just a small amount like $10 for the day or something or other like that from memory. Getting a park can be the problem though, takes a while driving around.

  • Don’t you just hate been ripped off by parking fees!. I parked in an underground shopping complex which stated the first 2 hours are free & then $30 every hour after. I was certain I would be out of there before the 2 hours were up but when I approached the boom gate a car was broken down & I had to wait until they got assistance. Hence when it was my turn to put my ticket in & been told to go to the pay station & pay $30 I was really annoyed & decided to complain to the centre manager & fortunately they paid me back.

  • Hm. I’m not sure that’s legal (I think they have to display the tariffs at the entry), but I’m also not sure it would be worth your time to pursue it.

    • i was wondering whether 31.50 was worth the hassle of complaining to authorities, i did contact the council and they said it was out of their control and to ring the railways but i figured it was better to let people know rather than go to the hassle of being pushed from place to place and spending more than the original charget
