How many of you are upset, yet once again, that Jekyll & Hyde, the musical, has been cancelled and will not tour Australia?
In 1995 Anthony Warlow was asked to be the lead in this musical and he put down a most wonderful CD of the songs from the show. He then succumbed to throat cancer and had to pull out, finally coming out in My Fair Lady where he didn’t have to sing much in 1996.
Jekyll & Hyde has been proposed to come to Australia now four times – the latest to open this December with Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Jemma Rix and Lucy Maunder and put on by Opera Australia. So now a minimum of 25 actors will be out work not including the theatre staff and orchestral people.
I had the privilege of seeing a production of this show in New York in 1997 – it was the most wonderful production I had ever seen and featured a young Canadian actor in the lead – he was spectacular in the role – but he didn’t have the class of Andrew Warhol as a singer. Pity.
But I am so disappointed that Australia once again will miss out on this most magnificent show especially at this latest hour.
