The results are in, and the most beautiful baby names according to science have been crowned – did your little one’s name make the list?

While we all like to think our children have the most beautiful names in the world, apparently there’s a science to beautiful-sounding names – the ones that sound best to our ears and minds.

And now boffins from the UK have taken a deep dive into the science of beautiful baby names and come up with a list that’s based on the principles of linguistics.

The study, commissioned by My 1st Years in collaboration with Associate Professor of Cognitive Linguistics at the University of Birmingham Dr Bodo Winter used principles of linguistics to rank 50 of the most popular girls’ and boys’ baby names in the world. And what they discovered was the baby names that are scientifically proven to be the most beautiful sounding to the human ear.

The Most Beautiful Baby Names In The World

In the UK, the most beautiful sounding baby names were Zayne and Sophia. In the US, Sophia also took out top billing for the girls, but Matthew was top of the pops for the boys.

Why Are These The Most Beautiful Baby Names?

According to Dr Winter, the principals of linguistics, like iconicity (sound symbolism) and emerging research has revealed that some words (and names) sound better than others. As part of the research, hundreds of baby names were analysed to find out which were the most beautiful sounding.

Mouths of Mums has put together our own 140 Most Beautiful Baby Names list, based on suggestions from our community.
