One mum’s claim of an ‘unspoken rule’ around leaving certain parking spots for mums has divided the internet, with one woman slamming ‘entitled’ mothers.

Mum Stefany shared a video of a supermarket car park, showing an empty spot right next to a trolley return bay.

“We all have the same unspoken rule, right?” she says.

“If you’re shopping without kids and this spot is open, it’s not for you. That’s for a mum with their kids that needs to unload right next to the cart drop, right?”

She explained in her caption that ‘it’s a safety thing’ and that these spots should be left for mums shopping solo with their kids.

But her video didn’t seem to strike a chord with other shoppers, who say they’ve never heard of the rule, and would continue to park in those spots. And one particular woman was so annoyed by the car park ‘unspoken rule’ that she made her own video, calling out ‘entitled’ mums – and it’s been viewed more than two million times.

“No. I can park in that spot if I want to without children,” Kendall begins. “It is not an assigned or designated parking spot.”

“The entitlement of ‘mamas’ like you is exactly what makes me want to say I’m going to exclusively use the handicap-accessible stall in bathrooms.

“I’m going to continue to park wherever the hell I want,” she concludes.

Interestingly, her video received a mixed response, with some supporting her stance, while others called her out.

“I hope when you have kids you NEVER find a close parking spot, every door you go through with a stroller opens in, and I hope your child has an atomic blowout in the middle of grocery shopping,” one mum commented.

While another wrote, “As a new mum, who is stressed I really wish they would designate some of these spots. It’s not entitlement it’s just hard being a mum.”

  • I have never heard about leaving the parking spot next to the trolley bay for mothers. What’s more one trolley bay is next to the Senior parking bay where I shop.

Where I shop, I have noticed that there are more and more parent’s parking spots than disabled spots and the trolley bay is no where near them!!!!!

  • I’ve never heard of this rule so I would have parked there if it had been vacant. The only places I won’t park in is a disabled parking spot. It’s a privilege to have children, doesn’t mean we deserve a special parking area because of this. If you want a great parking spot, just get to the shop as early as possible

  • Never heard of this ‘unspoken rule’. I think it’s made up. Around where I live there are designated parking for Pram Mum’s, Elderly, Coles/Woolworths/Aldi pickup and Disabled. All other parking spaces are up for grabs. I would hate to have been attacked for parking next to a trolley bay. They have more risks such as the metal barriers where you can not open the door wide and kids like to play with the trolleys and swing on the rails. Mum’s with Prams love the spots they have designated at they are usually wider.

  • I agree. I avoid them.

  • Um I think these spots are left because they are an awful place to park. You can’t even open your car door wide enough to get a kid out of a car seat.

  • To be honest I had never heard of the spot next to a trolley return bay being a spot for a mum with their kids that needs to unload right next to the cart drop and if you’re shopping without kids and this spot is open, it’s not for you. An unwritten rule is no rule, however there’s nothing wrong for being considerate.

  • i didnt know this rule either im 72 years old if they dont want us parking in these spots put a sign up or something, please dont park here its for mums and kids i think that is fair

  • I honestly didnt know this rule and I park next to them all the time

  • When my children were young car parks did not have designated parking spots for parents. There are no unwritten “rules” it is either a rule or it isn’t.

  • I’ve never heard of this ‘rule’ and as far as I’m concerned, the only spots that are for parents with children are those that are marked. In most shopping centres I’ve seen there are usually marked designated spots for parents and those are the ones that are reserved. If there is no marking, I’m parking there!

  • I’ve never heard of this ‘rule’ before and it makes sense. I don’t think it’s entitlement as such, it’s more so being considerate and kind because, let’s face it, being a mother is hard. Juggling kids, shopping, and a trolley is particularly difficult. I don’t think it matters too much with the addition of parent or pram parking but it’s definately something to be mindful of.
Having said this I was always told to avoid this parks growing up as your car can be damaged by a rougue or wayward trolley

  • I think priority should always be given for handicapped. I think pram only spots are great, but not necessary. I respect that many disagree.

  • I’ll park where I want. Where is close to the shop.

  • I’ve never heard of this ‘unspoken’ rule before, so it must not be universally known. I would never park in that spot in case a trolley rammed my car, so you can have it. But being a mother doesn’t make me feel like I am the only one entitled to special treatment. People from all walks of life can have times where they too would like a more convenient park. The elderly, those whose disability doesn’t qualify them for the disabled spot, people who are ill, people who are carers etc also have equal justification for wanting a good park.

  • It’s empty because those spaces are the ones that get rammed by trolleys all the time..

  • Its a courtesy car park so just move along and go about your day. Its like people who go to the petrol station and fill up their car and dont move their car forward to a parking space up ahead near the entrance instead you wait for them to pay and move their car. Common courtesy some people have and some don’t.. but mind your business you dont know what someone is going through.

  • I mean, legally, the only parking spot you can’t park in without a pass is a disabled parking spot.
Even the pram parking spots are more of a courtesy than a legal requirement.
The post is super entitled and completely unnecessary.
I can almost guarantee you everyone would have gotten on with their day had this not been posted.
There is a big swing right now, calling out entitled parents (rightfully so) and this person seems to want to glom on to that.
It’s not that well known of an unspoken rule.

  • I have never heard of this unspoken rule. Personally, I avoid this parking spot as I don’t want trollies being pushed into my car. I do take offense at this selfish person, who thinks they are entitled to everything. I have a disabled son and if she takes up a disabled bathroom for no reason then this makes it so difficult for those who really need it. She needs to grow up.

  • I agree with what other members have said, if the parking spot is not signed posted to specifically state it is reserved for parents with kids then it is open for anyone to park there. You can’t have an unspoken rule as that is not fair on the rest of the community who might have no idea about the unspoken rule.
