Each year the world’s most incredible birth images are recognised by the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers for their raw beauty, artistic storytelling and the emotion captured through the lens.

This is the 15th annual competition, and the entries just keep getting better and better. Hundreds of photographers from across the world submitted their entries into categories including birth, labour, delivery, postpartum and hardship and loss. Their entries were judged by the some of the globes leading photographers.

And this year saw the addition of a Member’s Choice Award category and the return of the Peoples’ Choice Award.

Just a gentle warning that these image do include infant loss.

  • These photos are all quite incredible and birth images are always so real and so engaging. They are all quite different and unique in what they have captured at such an incredible time on the journey of parenthood and life. ‘Dizzy Spells’ is my favourite because it is so earthy and authentic in so many ways.

  • I am so pleased I am not judging this at all. So hard to pick a real winner as all of the photos are beautiful in their own way. I guess I would pick for memory’s sake mainly the ‘Fresh in Father’s Arms’ because I do remember one of my babies having the wrinkles down their back. Photographers were never allowed in and nor were fathers then. But it was an early photo once we were home.

  • It’s very difficult to pick this time around but I think the one with the Best in Delivery would be my first pick and the second would be the two men waiting to find out if they will be Dads. It’s a very unselfish thing to do to give this couple a child they would never have otherwise and it shows on their faces how desperate they are.

  • It’s very hard to pick the one most favourite photo out of all of these incredible photo’s ! But I do love the “Fresh in Father’s Arms” by Lesley Hoogendoorn very much. The fact that it is from the Netherlands must be a coincidence since I’m Dutch. But I do love the details of that wrinkly baby skin and the baby bottom resting in daddies hands

  • These photos are absolutely beautiful, each in their kind. One can never stop to be impressed by the wonder of new life woven in the mum’s womb and the delivery of the baby into this world. It does take some bravery to have yourself photographed like this and share it in all vulnerability with the world indeed.

  • Oh goodness, my heart was not ready for the best in hardship and loss. So many emotions coming through in that shot. It’s so admirable for the parents to allow such a raw moment of their lives to be published. It’s incredible for all these people to show us these moments.

  • It never fails to amaze me how wonderful and insane birth is. The one that really got me is the hardship and loss one. That one was truely heartbreaking to witness but it’s going to be a memorable they can keep forever too. These photographers are very talented in capturing the emotion

  • Some of those photos are very beautiful. It is very brave for those Mums to allow themselves to be photographed and then exposed like this. Even with a beautiful photo it could feel uncomfortable.

  • Definitely some beautiful shots in there. They are made all the more special because they are completely natural and unposed. Capturing humanity at it’s best in life changing moments! My favourite is the best in labour black and white. It captures the bond between the parents and how supportive the dad is being. It’s just beautiful!
