For die-hard fans of Australia’s beloved blue heelers, a Bluey birthday cake is the answer to a celebration they’ll never forget.
The good news is that when it comes to creative birthday cakes like this, most of the effort is in the decorating. The cakes themselves often start with standard pans that many of us have on hand. But if you are pressed for time or low on oven space, the massively versatile Woolworths Mud Cake is widely available to form the foundation of your masterpiece.
When it does come to decorating, don’t panic! Thanks to the huge amount of supplies available in Australia (we’re talking sprinkles, ready-made icing shapes and gel food colouring to name a few), a knock-out Bluey cake is very possible with minimal skills. All you need is a little imagination, a few dollarbucks and lots of love.
How to make a Bluey birthday cake
Making a successful and memorable Bluey cake starts with the right equipment. You’ll need standard cake pans or store-bought cakes, a stand mixer or hand beaters for making your buttercream icing, a cake tray, an icing scraper and decorating tools. You’ll also need some patience – because cake decorating is all about details!
Next, you need to decide what style of cake you want to make. Here are some of the types our team of mums regularly use for kids’ cakes:
- Numbers - Number cakes usually involve cutting standard round and bar-shaped cakes to create the shape. If in doubt, we recommend referring to the Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake book (every Aussie mum’s birthday cake bible!) for easy templates for all numbers.
- Cylinder - This usually involves stacking two or three 20cm round cakes and using buttercream between them to hold it all together.
- Characters - These can be as simple or complex as you like! Try your hand at the famous Bluey duck cake for a crazy combination of chips and icing, or take on one of the show’s characters, like Aunt Trixie, Nana or Muffin. See below for some incredible examples and check out these Bluey cake hacks for some great Bluey and Bingo character ideas using the Woolies mud cake.
- Slabs - One of the easiest creations ever, these give you a lovely flat surface for decorating in unlimited ways.
- Cupcakes - Individual Bluey cupcakes look adorable and save you from the mess that comes with cutting a cake. They’re also a cinch to decorate, especially if you whip up some homemade cake toppers with toothpicks and printed images.
With your cakes at the ready, it’s time to decorate! Arm yourself with a basic buttercream icing recipe and/or stock up on ready-made fondant, also known as sugar paste. Then take some inspiration from the incredible examples below, or design your very own Bluey birthday cake worthy of the party table!
28 Bluey Birthday Cake Ideas For Kids Of All Ages
Whether you’re a confident decorator or a total newbie, a Bluey cake is possible at any skill level. Better yet, it’s a fun and super cute project that you know will bring huge smiles to little dials.
Here are some of our favourite Bluey cake ideas from clever bakers and determined mums from our own community. Our hats go off to every single one of them.
The Bluey Duck Cake
The Bluey Duck Cake became a huge hit after Season 2, episode 43 (a must-watch!). But in actual fact, the cake was first made famous in the vintage edition Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, which is where you will still find step-by-step instructions on how to pull this crazy combination of sweet and savoury together.
You’ll need a bar cake and a square cake to carve into the Rubber Ducky shapes. Bamboo skewers help hold everything together and lashings of fluffy icing (which the original recipe says to tint with apricot icing!) cover the cake. Then, it’s time to decorate with yellow-coloured sweet popcorn, potato chips, Smarties and strip licorice. Just don’t forget the red satin bow!

Macaron Magic
We love a macaron – but blue macarons on a Bluey cake are next-level magic. This incredible creation shared by mum, Kristy-Lee, shows the versatility of tower cakes. Lashings of blue buttercream icing (and fondant if you want) sprinkles, macarons and a gorgeous topper are all it takes!
Lifesize (nearly!)
There are birthday cakes, and then there’s this! Shared with us by mum, Tiffany, this showstopping Bluey character cake is delicious and an incredible feature for kids’ parties. What we love most about this is that once the cake is engineered to stand up, the fondant decoration isn’t overly complicated. Just equip yourself with plenty of fondant icing and good-quality gel colours!
Ultimate Drip Cake
Contributed by mum, Abbie, this homemade gem is a fab idea for any novice (or nervous!) cake decorator. For something similar, you’ll need two round cakes, blue buttercream icing, chocolate ganache, sprinkles, Smarties or M&Ms, lollipops and a few of the kids’ bluey character toys – if you can get your hands on them!
Stacks Of Fun!
Can’t choose between Bluey and Bingo – have both! This contribution from mum, Felicity, is a true work of art and we love that it uses the comic cake outlining techniques to make the characters pop. It’s a fantastic idea for double birthdays.
Beloved Bluey
Imagine little faces when they see this on the party table! From mum, Hayley, this adorable cake captures the true cuteness of Bluey. Clearly, a lot of baking and decorating went into this amazing feat, so if you take on something similar, allow time, time and more time!
Top Of The Tower
This professional number from Royal Cake is a summertime delight. Decorated with seashells and pastel-hued icing in signature Bluey and Bingo colours, it’s as pretty as a picture, gender-neutral and big enough to feed a crowd.
Perfect Portions
Cutest cupcakes ever? We sure think so. From Tantastic Cakes, these beauties take the fuss out of dealing with a whole cake and ensure every little human gets a perfect portion. The great thing about Bluey-themed cupcakes is that you can make or buy the toppers ahead of time and put them together quite quickly just before the birthday event.
Bones & Bikkies
We can’t stop gazing at this cake – the detail is extraordinary and the palette irresistible. It uses a classic number cake, buttercream icing and loads of clever decorations that bring it to life. Of course, the imagination is the limit with how you can decorate something similar: use store-bought decorations, confectionary or toppers if you don’t have the luxury of making your own decorations.
Let’s Dance!
Drizzles, twirls and sprinkles – oh my! From mum, Emma, this classic-style cake is achievable for all levels of bakers. And the best bit? You can mix up the decorations and colour scheme however you like. We love the use of character cut-outs for the perfect finishing touch.
Wackadoo!
Low on time? This Bluey birthday cake is a great example of what you can achieve with a little imagination. By stacking and icing two round cakes, you’ve got the ideal base to decorate! Add some character figures and finishing touches for a cake they’ll never forget.
Favourite Episode
For time-poor parents, this idea from mum, Victoria, is one of our favourites. With store-bought or home-baked cakes stacked and iced, all you have to do is stick on some pre-printed pictures and signs to make it sing. What could be better than their very own Bluey episode for their birthday?
Pretty In Pink
From Teez Cakes and Bakes, this is a true work of art. Piled high with macarons, shells, flowers, cookies and sprinkles, it’s like a pink Bluey wonderland that kids will adore exploring. Loving the use of character cut-outs on the cookies.
Slab Style
Slab cakes are awesome for kids’ birthdays because they look amazing and they’re easy to cut. This super cute creation from mum, Abbie, celebrates Bluey in all her glory and uses cartoon cake outlining techniques for a fab effect. Try your hand with something similar in your child’s favourite character.
Guess The Episode!
Needless to say, a lot of us wouldn’t know where to start with something so polished, so you might want to hit your cake maker up for this one! Aside from the undeniable cuteness factor, what stole our hearts with this amazing Bingo cake is the fact that it captures such a sweet expression from an unforgettable episode. It’s a mighty big A+ from us!
Ready To Party
Professionally made from Colour Me Cake in Geelong, this unmissable Bluey-themed birthday cake is as pretty and polished as it is fun. Decorated beautifully with shells, fondant balls and Bluey character cut-outs, you can count on lots of oohs and aahs over something similar. And can we talk about the rainbow topper? Just beautiful!
Perfect Pops
Prefer pops? Bluey can do that! One of the most colourful and fun additions to any party table, cake pops are always a hit with kids – and they are so easy to make, you could even get the kids to help. We adore the use of paper straws and character cut-outs to make these pops POP!
Prettiest Pastels
You’re gushing, right? Us too! But while this professionally made Bluey cake is a showstopper, it’s also totally within the realm of possibility for novice cake makers. It all starts with an immaculately iced tower cake in the perfect hue. From there, it’s just a matter of sticking on your embellishments, in this case, fondant balls, character cut-outs, icing flowers and a pastel rainbow.
Sweetest Siblings
Planning a double party or just having a lot of guests? From Aussie mum, Sophie, these Bluey and Bingo cakes are the answer to serious cuteness and loads of yum. Easy and effective, both use round cakes, buttercream icing and character stick-ons to bring both pups to life. We don’t know which one we love more!
Blissful Bluey
We love a tower cake, and this creation from Tayla goes to show that it doesn’t take a mountain of decorations to make something memorable. Use either store-bought or homemade round cakes and a combination of fondant and buttercream icing to create a similar tribute to Australia’s favourite pup.
Top Tier
Edible gold? Yes, please! Professionally made by Marcela’s Cakes, this creation uses tiered frosted cakes as the base for something truly beautiful. It’s embellished with fondant balls (we’re guessing they have a styrofoam core), flecks of edible gold and character figures. What’s so great about this style of cake is that you need only change up the colour scheme and figures to adapt to other characters in the series.
Double Trouble
From mum, Brianna, this double-duty cake knocks it out of the park. Made up of two tower cakes, literally dripping with Bluey goodness, it’s connected using a fondant rainbow! Twirly lollipops and character figures are the cherries on this incredible cake feat.
Beach Days
Packing lots of beachy Bluey vibes, this adorable birthday cake from mum, Rebecca, is proof that sometimes, less is more with cakes. Using some Bluey toys, icing shells, sprinkles and a cake topper, this cake is as cute as they come.
Layers Of Fun
We never tire of seeing new ways to decorate tower cakes. This professional creation from Laura Elizabeth Cakes is decorated with lashings of thick buttercream, huge blue rosettes and colourful sprinkles at the base. With a cartoon-style Bluey figure on the front, there’s no mistaking who their favourite character is.
Cutest Pups Ever
If these aren’t the cutest Bluey cakes ever, they come pretty close! Shared with us by mum, Billie, we’re obsessed with how each cake perfectly captures the essence of each character. With a lot of fondant icing involved and some engineering to get both cakes standing upright, we’re happy to leave something like this to the professionals!
Double Rainbows
Do you remember the episode where Bluey and Mum see a double rainbow? If it’s a favourite in your house, then THIS is a cake to take on. We’re completely smitten with the pink backdrop, but you could easily change up the colour scheme to suit your own little human’s taste.
Pick A Pup
Contributed by mum, Rebecca, this clever tower cake celebrates Bingo and Bluey by using different coloured fondant icing. If they can’t choose a favourite character, this is the way to go!
