1. Port Arthur

This historical penal colony village is a fascinating place to visit and a must do if visiting Tasmania. See their website HERE for more information.

This zoo is located in Launceston. Kids can hand feed many different animals and visit the Jurassic swamp, which has 40, life size dinosaurs (sculptures!)! See website HERE for more information.

3. Seahorse World

This seahorse farm is located at Beauty Point and it is a fabulous place to take the kids. You go on a tour and learn lots about seahorses and seadragons including behind the scenes at the farm where you can see fingernail size baby seahorses! Children under 4 are FREE. See their website HERE for more information.

4. Planetarium

The QVMAG Planetarium in Launceston is a great place to take your kids who are interested in space. See their website HERE for more information.

5. Penguin Tour

Right at the top of Tassie, in Low Head, you can go on a penguin tour at night and watch fairy penguins arriving back to shore. The kids will love this! See their website HERE for more information.

  • About 3 years ago my husband and I took our children to tassie for our very first family holiday (2 weeks during school holidays) in winter.it was the best time we have had. My children loved seeing the snow on the mountains. I would suggest hiring a house it costs less and you could make your own meals. A must see is Salamanca market sensational produce, Cadbury is chocolate heaven. Or take the car on the ferry across to brunie island the drive through their is breath taking. We also discovered a old town Richmond which is a must if you love savoury pies. The bakery is outstanding. My husband and son suffer from asthma during our time in tassie they didn’t use there puffer and were ok

  • Launceston Museum is a great little museum for kids- hands on activities and a machine that spits out Cool Mints, not to mention the great display of wildlife including the Tassie Tiger (stuffed of course). Also there are monkeys at the Launceston Botanical Gardens. There is an enclosure containing those monkeys with red bottoms. Our kids loved watching them- particularly the mums feeding their young! Best of all, it’s all free!

  • We had a family trip to Tasmania when I was a teenager and I loved it! I can’t wait to take my kids there when they’re a bit older. One of my fave places was Port Arthur and also the penguin watching at Bicheno but a great place for kids that wasn’t on this list is Tasmazia.
