The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that five members of an Adelaide family have died in India.

The members of the family, including two children, have been killed in a road crash near New Delhi, India.  ABC News reports that the cause of the crash is believed to be a burst tyre that sent the car into a safety barrier, before the SUV flipped on its roof and landed in the path of oncoming traffic.

Anamika Dutta, 45, her daughters Neetika and Pipasa, aged 12 and 15, and sister Sonia, 25, died at the scene, while her 20-year-old son, Tirvijai, died in hospital a short time later.

Survivors of the crash, Anamika’s husband, Rupendra Dutta and her father, NK Paliwal, are being treated in hospital.

The Times of India reported the family were on their way to the Taj Mahal when the accident occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Dutta, originally from New Delhi, runs a restaurant in Adelaide.
