Easter is reaching new heights this year, with Australia’s first-ever hot cross bun café set to take flight above Melbourne.

Hosted inside a hot air balloon, the experience will give guests a once-in-a-lifetime chance to enjoy freshly toasted hot cross buns while floating thousands of feet above the city.

Guests will quite literally say bun voyage as they take flight on IGA’s Hot Cross Balloon, offering one of the most unique ways to enjoy the iconic Easter treat – with hot cross buns toasted using the balloon’s flame burner.

High above Melbourne, guests will be treated to a sky-high café experience, complete with an IGA butler serving the exclusive new Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Reese’s Hot Cross Buns.

Research commissioned by IGA found that more than six in ten Aussies (63%) agree food tastes better when the experience feels special or unique – so what better way to enjoy a hot cross bun than up to 5000 feet in the air.

IGA store owner Hitesh Palta said the experience was designed to give locals a fun and memorable way to celebrate the season.

“Hot cross buns are already the most iconic Easter treat, but this year they’re getting even hotter with two exclusive flavours from Reese’s and Terry’s Chocolate Orange, coupled with the hot air balloon experience,” they said.

“We wanted to create something truly special for locals – a chance to enjoy their favourite Easter flavours while literally taking the celebration to new heights. It’s an experience that’s second to bun.”

This bun-in-a-million experience will take place in Melbourne with a bespoke flight available on Monday 16th of March. A limited amount of free tickets will be available via the Eventbrite link on Saturday 14 March from 9am, but get in quick, because once they’re gone, they’re gone!

  • I have heard about the chocolate orange buns and I’m desperate to try them – it’s my favorite flavour. Would be fabulous. I don’t live anywhere near Melbourne so no chance of having this experience. It sounds fun, though! I hope a lot of people get to enjoy it this Easter.

  • IGA certainly has gone out of their way to come up with something new and spectacular. It’s a pity it’s only set up in Melbourne and not across multiple cities and states. I certainly would be up for a hot air balloon ride 🙂 I must share with my foster daughter who currently resides in Melbourne.

  • Aw wow, that is certainly a fun and memorable way to celebrate the season ! I agree that food does taste better when the experience feels special or unique. It is interesting why food taste better in such occasion and I think it has to do with the psychological effect. When we feel good we make more dopamine.
