Officers investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann still have hope they may find her alive, nine years on.

Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie, the head of Scotland Yard’s homicide squad told the Evening Standard: “There is ongoing work. There is always a possibility that we will find Madeleine and we hope that we will find her alive.

“That’s what we want and that’s what the family and the public want and that is why the Home Office continue to fund it. There is work that needs to be done still.”

Madeleine disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal’s Algarve on May 3 2007, as her parents dined at a nearby tapas restaurant with friends.

His comments come after Home Secretary Theresa May granted police an additional £95,000 ($175K) to extend the five-year-old inquiry for a further six months.

Det Ch Supt Duthie added: “There is a missing girl and if she has been murdered and if we think we have got justifiable and reasonable lines of inquiry to pursue then they should be dealt with.”

We all live in hope that there are answers to this case.

  • That is very sad. I can’t imagine how heart broken should be the parents. I don’t believe after so long they will find her, but let’s keep positive thoughts, we never know.

  • I know there have been cases around the world where children have made it back home to their families after being kidnapped for several years.
It might be so hard to rebuild a relationship with a child that spent more of their lives with others then they did with you. So very hard.

  • I realoy hope they find her safe and well. I lose sight of my kids for a second at the shops and die of worry, I can’t begin to imagine what these poor parents must be feeling and going through for this long.

  • I can’t believe they’re still investigating 9 years later! I have to wonder though…..if she is still alive, how damaged will she be? Heaven knows what’s happening to her, how she’s being treated. If she is still out there, I hope she’s found soon and returned to her loving family

  • As a parent, this just breaks my heart. To have your child kidnapped and 9 years later still have no answer, similar to the Morcombes who fought so hard for Daniel. We can only keep her visage in peoples minds, keep the public looking for her.

  • 9 years wow that is a long time. I hope that they can come to some sort of conclusion to this case for the parents and the police investigators – it must be gut wrenching for them all.

I do hope that the police have some sort of justified leads for the deputy to be spending that amount of money on, otherwise the tax payers might start asking ?’s

  • It only takes one person who knows what happened to Maddie to make an anonymous call and end all this heartache.
