Kids paraphernalia is everywhere in my house so to help organise it a little better, we built a bag rack. It’s easy to make and the kids love it.

We have used the space under our bench so it’s out of the way and puts a wasted space to good use.

What you’ll need:

  • Wood – the length required for your space.
  • Screws
  • Hooks
  • Paint (optional)

Method:

  1. Find a wall that you would like to hang your bag rack and cut the wood to the correct length.
  2. Drill holes in the wood to attach it to the wall.
  3. Screw in place.
  4. Paint the wood if you want to and leave it to dry.
  5. Attach hooks, ours are 48cms apart to suit wide school bags.

I find this is an easy way to keep the kids school things from being everywhere all over the house.

Have you made a bag rack before? Please share in the comments below.

  • Fantastic! I’ve been bugging my husband about doing something like this, as we have 3 kids in school, so stuff is spread everywhere. I can make this myself! Yay! :-)

  • Yes, we somehow need to incorporate a mud room / organisational area for the mess we get before and after school.

  • Great idea! I’ve been looking into somewhere to put the kids school stuff and was thinking shelving or a cabinet but this is a much easier and less expensive idea :)

  • We have made a similar rack to hang wet coats, umbrellas, etc. on at our front door/patio so that they may hopefully be dry before our guests or us need to use them again. Also stops drips in the house, LOL

  • A wonderful idea. You don’t know how much weight your children are going to have in their school bags as they advance up year by year. They will have to be very sturdy, perhaps some put lower at a later date so the extra weight doesn’t have to be lifted as high. I like the idea of having shelves with cubes in them that shoes in too. If they are wet they need to be left in the open air though…..Make with little ones that both shoes go in their right place…..If you take them off for them, don’t do what a friend of mine does – drop them on the floor…and what’s worse in a different place.

  • We put a blanket box in an awkward nook by the front door – a little extra storage, and the kids keep their school bags etc on top. Works great.

  • Such a simple idea can really create such a huge impact on simplicity and organisation in the household. Worth doing for sure.

  • I just made something similar and its so easy! Now the kids know where their hats and bags go, and less morning madness of trying to find all their bits and pieces! (Not to mention everything looks much tidier)

  • Thank you! I am going to attempt his without my hubby’s help!

  • Very good idea. We have a little piece of furniture at the entrance, where you can put shoes on the bottom, bags in the middle and on top more stuff. Nicely organized.
