In a study that flies in the face of every Grinch and Scrooge that exists, researchers have found that people who put their Christmas decorations up earlier, are happier. So get your jingle on.

If you’re the type of jolly fellow who dusts off the Christmas wreath and tree as soon as the Halloween decorations are down, then you’re as happy as can be, according to the experts.

Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown says putting up decorations early (and we’re assuming this means before December 1), gives us all of those nostalgic warm and fuzzy feelings that transport us back to our childhood.

“In a world of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of childhood,” McKeown told Unilad.

“Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement so putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!”

Psychotherapist Amy Morin explained that there may be other reasons putting up Christmas decorations early makes us feel good.

“Perhaps the holidays serve as a reminder of when a loved one was still alive. Or maybe looking at a Christmas tree reminds someone of what life was like when they still believed in Santa.

“For people who have lost a loved one, the holidays may serve as a reminder of happy times they had with that person in the past. Decorating early may help them feel more connected with that individual.”

In one study researchers indicate that we even perceive people in houses that are decorated as more ‘friendly, sociable and accessible’.

“The results support the idea that residents can use their home’s exterior to communicate attachment and possibly to integrate themselves into a neighbourhood’s social activities,” researchers wrote.

  • It may be true that early decorations can positively impact mental well-being by triggering positive emotions and fostering a sense of anticipation and community. However, it might also create stress or anxiety for some individuals due to societal pressures, comparisons, or reminders of difficult experiences or memories of a lost loved one.

    • I don’t think I will put Christmas decorations up at all this year. Our plan is to travel oversees with Christmas and new year this year, so we won’t be celebrating this season at home and it would be an unnecessary hassle to get the trees out and decorate them. Maybe we won’t even do gifts as such this year, I’m sure the kids will be spoiled during our travel

  • I used to put the tree up on December 1 but I no longer bother. My family members live 300km and 500km away and they have their own families. I don’t mind as my household has changed and I’m no longer able to get around and Christmas is meant to be a happy time. I don’t like my kids seeing me in so much pain. I’d prefer to ruin my Christmas knowing they were all having a wonderful time. That’s what makes me happy

  • Putting up decorations for the children when they lived at home was something I did early as they loved to see it, but now I am completely on my own, I don’t bother at all. I am still as happy as a single can be, so I’ll pass on this chore.

  • I’m looking forward to putting the tree up in early December. It takes up too much room in our lounge for it to go up earlier.

  • We do it on the 1st December in our house. We all get together have Christmas music playing and have nibbles. I wouldn’t change our special day but happy for everyone else. Could be interesting this year though as we got a pup

  • I usually put the tree up the first weekend of December (or close to). Our son has left home this year so it will be the first year of just hubby and I. That is going to feel weird and had me really thinking about our Christmas tree and what will be under it. Perhaps I do need to go earlier, to get in the spirit.

  • We were always told it was bad luck to put up before 1 Dec, so won’t be going up in our house before then! It makes me happy to see others do it though!

  • As a child, I used to count down the days until I could put up my Christmas decorations. I would beg my parents to let me do it earlier and earlier each year. But now as an adult, I’m much more patient. I wait until the 1st of December to start decorating. However, deep down inside, I’m still that same kid who can’t wait to deck the halls…
So, for all of you early decorators out there, I salute you. You are the true Christmas champions. You bring joy to the world with your festive cheer. And for those of us who wait until December, we’re just a little bit jealous. ????

  • I love all things Christmas but I find if you put the decorations up too early its such a long wait for kids especially little ones… so I usually wait until the first…

  • We have started putting our decorations up, mainly the outdoor ones. Hoping to put the Christmas tree up today, put a bit of Christmas music on and make an afternoon of it.
