Kids these days are spending less and less time outdoors with the rise of technology use and not getting dirty and not exposed to germs. They are also using hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial soap which gets rid of all germs, some of which help build their immune system.

  • My little boy loves being outside and digging in our garden/dirt patch. He once tried to eat bird poo though, if that doesn’t build immunity I don’t know what does

  • Oh yes, especially my younger kids love to get dirty. Yesterday my youngest (3yr old with Down syndrome) took her dirty nappy off and smeared poo everywhere…how dirty was that, yuk !

  • Let kids be kids. Let them have fun during the day and bath them at night before bed or late afternoon during the cold weather. They should wash their hands thoroughly after going to the toilet and before meals.

  • Absolutely true. Nowadays we use too many disinfectants for example. We should stop buying them. And let indeed kids play with dirt. Didn’t you use preparing mud cakes when you were a child? I did! It was so much fun!
And the antibiotics.. I read somewhere that kids who get antibiotics before 3 years of age, are at higher risk of having a weak immune system.
All things to keep into consideration.

  • We are surrounded by germs. Even if children do not play in the dirt, they are still exposed to germs whenever they touch anything at home, at school, in shopping centres, at the movies etc. Children should always maintain good hygiene habits. The only thing I agree with is that antibacterial soaps are unnecessary.

  • My kids would not be able to survive if they had to stay clean. They are aLways dirty (but never watch tv).

  • I agree that children should be exposed to germs. I no longer buy antibacterial soaps as they are encouraging superbugs, very scary!
