Mark Zukerberg, CEO of Facebook and wife Dr Priscilla Chan used Facebook to make two big announcements this morning.

Mark and Priscilla announced in a Facebook post the safe arrival of their first child, a daughter named Max. The post also contained a letter to their new daughter.

The letter contains a pledge to donate a large amount of their fortune to their charitable orgaisation Chan Zukerberg Initiative. “Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities. We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to advance this mission.” Mark and Priscilla say.

The new parents finish the letter with the touching words, “Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world.”

I think all parents want a better world for our children and while most of us cannot make a $45 billion dollar donation to help, we can all try to make a difference in our own way.
