Parents plead guilty to unlawfully killing eight-week-old daughter.

In April we reported that Melanie Anne Pears, 30,  appeared in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court via video link from a secure unit at the Graylands psychiatric hospital, reports ABC NEWS.

Her lawyer Bill Harris told the court that despite his client being ill at the time of the baby’s death in January this year, “she accepts that her omissions were of such a nature to amount to criminal negligence”.

“That makes her responsible,” he said.

Previous court hearings were told that the baby, who was born prematurely in November 2015, was malnourished and had multiple injuries including skull and rib fractures when she was found at a house in Saint James.

The baby’s father, Tony Paraha, 50, was also charged with manslaughter.

UPDATE 9 November

Father pleads guilty to unlawfully killing baby daughter found malnourished, with skull fractures.

The 50-year-old Perth man has pleaded guilty to unlawfully killing his eight-week-old daughter, reports ABC news.

Previous court hearings heard the infant was malnourished and had multiple injuries including skull and rib fractures.

The baby’s mother, Melanie Pears, pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge earlier this year.

Both she and Paraha will be sentenced in the Supreme Court in January 2017.

Both are being held in custody.

  • I don’t understand how anyone could do such a thing. The poor little thing went through a struggle early in life only to have it stolen from her.

  • Another real life story of parents killing their children. Has this become the norm? And something we’re going to become used to? What is wrong with people?

  • Actually, from this article it’s really not clear how this happened to begin with.

  • I’m surprised being a prem that she wasn’t having regular check-ups to make sure she was doing well. Maybe they weren’t needed? I don’t know the full story, but the parents must’ve been in a bad place to allow such a horrible death. R.I.P. sweet one. 🙁

  • As the (Step)Grandmother of little Narelle, who i unfortunately never had the chance to meet,i ask that we do not judge when we do not know the story.Yes its an unspeakable act.one that i will never understand. But we can’t judge what we dont know.I never thought this would happen to my family, but it just as easily could have been yours…

  • what a sad world we live in today where parents kill their own children – what is going wrong with society – why don’t people who can’t cope ask for help, why does no one offer help anymore? – so sad that all these beautiful children are being unloved, and murdered

Hope all the children who have died by the hands of their parent/s get the justice that they deserve!

    RIP little children

  • I just cannot see into the head of a person who could kill their own child, mental illness or not, this is an unforgivable act

  • So sad. I can’t fathom how something like this happens. Parents are supposed to love and protect their little angels.

  • Such a betrayal of trust when a parent kills. At least she accepts her responsibility.
