Rebecca Gibney has revealed she was “really disturbed” by the reaction fellow actress, Melissa George, has faced since speaking out about her abusive former partner.

She shared in an Instagram post that she too had been affected by family violence. Rebecca told her followers she was “appalled” by comments she had read.

“This is a happy snap of my sister Stella and me when we were kids. No one would know that we were being raised in a family of domestic violence.

Last night on the Sunday program fellow actor Melissa George talked about being attacked by her former partner.

I am currently in NZ and didn’t watch the program but have been really disturbed by the reports of the online response to Melissa’s interview. That somehow she deserved what happened to her.

As a victim of domestic violence myself – I grew up in a household where violence toward our mother was a common occurrence – I am appalled that anyone can accuse a woman of ‘ asking’ to be beaten.

Domestic violence is wrong – violence in any form is wrong. Please let us remember how difficult it is for anyone that has been in this situation to speak out.

Regardless of how you may perceive someone in the public eye please remember they are as human as the rest of us and deserve as much compassion as the next person.

And for anyone in a similar situation there is always someone who will listen. And you can get through it. My mother and my family is a testament to that. Just reach out. #love #peace #pleasetalkaboutit #domesticviolenceiswrong”

Actress, Melissa George, has faced online criticism since sharing her story on Channel Seven’s Sunday Night about her battle with former partner, Jean-David Blanc, over custody of their sons, Raphaël, three, and 16-month-old Solel.

The former Home and Away star told interviewer Steve Pennells that she was attacked by Blanc in their Paris home in September last year.

“He grabbed the back of my head and smashed it on the metal thing where you hang your coats and that’s when I scratched him and I tried to fight for my life,” she said.

Melissa is desperately trying to bring her children back to Australia.

  • It is not OK for women to abuse men either. I know one who was hit in the face twice with a spiky heel shoe. Luckily she missed his eyes. Another time just after he got home from work. he was drugged and passed out. He didn’t even have sufficient time awake to give her the money as he normally did. Next morning he discovered she had taken his entire pay packet out of his pocket.

  • It must be horrible living in such a violent home.

  • Good on Rebecca for speaking up and sharing her story.

    • It does help when other high profile people in the community support and lend their voices to important causes and domestic violence is an important cause to support.

  • There is so much awareness about domestic violence and no one ‘asks for it’. This comment always disgusts me, there is never ever any excuse for domestic violence. All praise to Rebecca Gibney for standing up for another woman and for sharing her story. We need all people in the community to stand up and be heard when it comes to domestic violence. Victims of domestic violence should not be shamed.

  • Domestic violence is an abhorrent act. The very fact that she felt her only option left to protect her children was to go on a crappy australian current affairs program speaks volumes as to the position this man has put her in. Before anyone judges her they need to ask themselves, what would they do to protect their own babies?
