Apple Crumble is possible one of the most loved desserts … ever!
Well is certainly has been in our family for as long as we can remember. If ever our grandparents were coming for dinner, they would bring a gigantic Apple Crumble which would have us all begging to eat dessert before dinner.
Nana would have 80% cooked the Apple Crumble before she came. Then 20 minutes before dessert time she would pop it into the oven to get the apple crumble to warm right through and the topping to become all toasted and crunchy.
Apple Crumble is not only a wonderfully warming Winter dessert … it’s pretty much perfect all year round. Serve it up cold in Summer with lashings of ice cream and lovely cold cream. Dial up with warming deliciousness in Winter with hot custard or a warm sweet butterscotch or caramel sauce.
Of course you can always mix your Apple Crumble up a little too – add some Rhubarb or Berries, throw a handful of nuts into the crumble topping or to make it absolutely sublime, caramelise the apples in brown sugar in a non-stick pan before adding to the crumble.
We love that this recipe for Apple Crumble is traditional … but also adds a little twist. Who doesn’t love a little flavour surprise when you bite in?

Which apples are best for Apple Crumble?
Traditionally Apple Crumble Recipes always called for Granny Smith Apples (or cooking apples as they were always called). They’re crisp, juicy but they are quite tart. Usually the recipe would then call for sugar to be added to the apples when cooking. We always avoid added processed sugar wherever possible so love using red apples like Pink Lady Apples in our Apple Crumble.

Ingredients (serves 10 | makes 1 Large Apple Crumble)
- FOR THE APPLES
- 8 large Pink Lady Apples (or other red apples)
- 250g Nestle Caramel Top n Fill
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- FOR THE CRUMBLE TOPPING
- 200g Plain Flour
- 100g Butter, cubed and softened
- 1/2 cup Caster Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt
- Peel and remove seeds and roughly chop the apples into 2cm cubes. Place into a medium saucepan and just cover with water. Place onto a high stove, cover with saucepan lid and simmer until the apples are just soft. Reserve about 1/3 cup of the cooking water then strain to remove the remaining water.
- While the apples are still warm gently stir through the cooking water, the cinnamon and the caramel until well mixed. Spoon the apples into the base of a large ovenproof dish greased with a little butter and lightly dusted with flour.
- Combine the flour, salt and sugar in a mixing bowl. Cube the butter and rub through the flour mixture until well combined (the mixture should resemble breadcrumbs).
- Evenly cover the apples with the crumble topping and roughly flatten out. Be careful not to pack down too hard or you won't get lots of lovely crispy bits in the topping.
- Cook in the centre of a moderate - hot oven (approx 190.C) Check regularly to ensure the crumble topping does not burn. If it starts to brown too quickly, reduce the heat and move the dish down in the oven.
