Bread and Butter Pudding is a wonderful dessert pretty much any time of the year. And the absolute best part about it (aside from the yum factor) is that it takes almost no time to prepare.
What is Bread and Butter Pudding?
Bread and Butter Pudding is a simple dessert that traditionally involves covering sliced bread and sultanas in an egg custard mixture and baking it for around 40 minutes.
Hailing from centuries-old British cuisine like so many delicious baked desserts, it’s loved for the simple fact that it’s SO versatile and can be made to suit individual tastes. Add spices, mix up the variety of bread, or throw in some dried fruit or orange zest – the choice is yours!
Traditionally, this pudding was a great way to use up semi-stale sandwich loaves, but many home cooks like to take things up a notch by using fancier bread, like buttery Brioche, croissants and even Hot Cross Buns. Combined with the silky goodness of egg custard and then baked to golden perfection, it’s as irresistible as homemade desserts get.
If you want to get creative with your pudding, here’s a list of possible ingredients that will add some wow to this old-timey dish:
- Orange or lemon zest
- Pistachio nuts
- Nutmeg or cinnamon
- Chocolate hazelnut spread (Nutella)
- Marmalade or jam
- Sliced apple or pear
- Whipped cream
- Ice cream
- Vanilla pods
- Brioche
- Croissants
- Hot Cross Buns
Can you freeze it?
Yes! It is possible to freeze bread pudding either before baking it or after. Of course, just make sure you properly package and label it prior to freezing. Also, keep in mind that this dessert will keep in the fridge for several days after it’s baked, so there’s no need to pop it in the freezer immediately.
In fact, this is a pudding that tastes even better the next day, so we highly recommend popping it in the fridge. (Oh and psst, if you love cold puddings, you won’t believe how good overnight weetbix is for a delicious breaky treat!)
How to make Bread and Butter Pudding
Trust us, this classic dessert is so easy, the kids could make it – and once they get a taste of it, you can bet they will!
It’s also an easy one to make ahead of time and keep warm in the oven or warming drawer to enjoy after dinner.
Take a look at the recipe below contributed by MoM Member, Kathryn. It’s an old-style recipe that calls for sultanas, regular bread, cinnamon, eggs, sugar and milk. But of course, if you want to jazz it up a bit more with Brioche, dried fruit or decadent jams, go for it! And don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Ingredients (serves 4)
- 6 slices Bread
- Butter
- Cinnamon
- 1 1/2 cups Milk
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 2 Eggs
- handful Sultanas
Method
- Preheat oven to 160 degrees.
- Butter the bread (I do both sides). Slice the bread (I do diagonally across because that is what fits well in my dish).
- Layer the bread across the dish and sprinkle with cinnamon as you go. Add the sultanas in the middle (they burn if they are on top).
- In a jug mix the milk, sugar and eggs (I beat with a fork to combine well).
- Gently pour the milk mixture into the dish.
- Press the bread down into the milk mixture and let sit for around 15 minutes.
- Bake in the oven around 40 minutes.
- Serve with cream and/or ice cream.
