This Hearty Pea and Ham Soup Recipe is easy and wholesome. Serve with thick buttered bread on chilly winter’s night, and it’s the perfect dinner for the whole family.


Ingredients (serves 5 | makes 5 serves )

  • 1 packet Split Peas
  • kilo Bacon bones
  • 1 Soup pack 2 carrots, 1 potato, 1 stick celery, 1 onion, 1 turnip any other vegs you like.

Method

  1. Soak split peas overnight then drain and tip into soup pot. Add Bacon bones, cover with water.
  2. Diced up the soup pack vegetables and add to soup pot. Add salt and pepper as desired.
  3. Bring to boil and then let simmer for 2 hours or longer. Stir every now and again. Also remove the soup scum (grey froth) on top pf soup every now and again. Cook until bacon falls off bones and split peas are soft. Soup will thicken. Remove bones when cooked..

Notes

My mum would make this and now I have been making it for decades. It is simple, tasty and great for families on a cold day to warm their bellies.

  • Great tasty and easy to make dish, can have with nice fresh bread as a table option but this would be filling enough on it’s own I think.
