Tomato Relish is one of the most versatile condiments to have in the pantry and the fridge … there’s almost nothing that doesn’t taste better with a dollop!

Whether it’s a Toasted Cheese SourDough Sandwich with pickles or some freshly made Sausage Rolls or you’re wanting to whip up a quick Seafood Sauce, tomato relish is your best basic ingredient.

Make up some huge batches of this Tomato Relish Recipe when tomatoes are in season.  Summer and Autumn in Australia is the best time for Tomatoes – they will be much cheaper and the flavour will be far more intense.

This tomato relish is so easy to make, double batches brilliantly and is always delicious!

  • 500g onions
  • 375g white sugar
  • 1 Tbsp curry powder
  • 1 Tbsp mustard powder
  • half a handful salt
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • enough to cover white vinegar

  1. Cut tomatoes into small pieces and slice onions. Place in a large bowl together. Sprinkle with salt and leave to stand overnight.
  2. Drain off the liquid and put in a large pot.
  3. Cover with sugar and vinegar and bring to the boil for 5 minutes. Add cayenne pepper.
  4. Mix mustard powder and curry powder with a little vinegar and add. Boil for a further 1- 1¼ hours. Make sure you stir occasionally it so it doesn't burn.
  5. Bottle while hot.

This Tomato Relish Recipe is an old family recipe we've been making for generations. We like to call it Grandma's Tomato Relish!

If you're a fan of pickles, relishes and preserves, you might also like to try some of these recipes:

  • Thanks for the recipe, but personally I prefer one that was on here years ago as a tomato sauce.
It was for 1.5k amount of tomatoes, 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar and 1 tbsp. salt. These days I halve the tomatoes and add equal roasted red capsicums and delete the salt. It tastes very close to a commercial tomato sauce and as it is without all the additives, it’s got to be better for you, especially if you grow your own produce.

  • This would be so much nicer than the bottled stuff as at least you know what ingredients are going into it

  • Yummy! Going to do this with the tomatoes growing

  • I’m trying this one. My hubby loves relish so a homemade batch sounds like a great idea and at least I know what’s going into it.

  • I love tomato relish as an option to use in many ways – on crackers with cheese; with fritters; on a burger. I only use the store/jar version and have never considered making my own. This sounds easy!!

  • I have a gazillion tomatoes on my tplants at the moment and have been wondering what to do with them!

  • I wish I’d known about this recipe when my husband was alive. We had so many tomatoes coming out of our ears. He had a green thumb when it came to tomatoes and pumpkins

  • Perfect to try over summer and for gifting.

  • This is great- we had a massive crop last year and relish was one way to use them.
