BLACK ICE
By Becca Fitzpatrick
The Young Adult sensation Becca Fitzpatrick, author of the best-selling Hush Hush saga, is back with a new novel! Black Ice, a riveting stand –alone romantic thriller set against the treacherous backdrop of the mountains of Wyoming.
Britt Pfeiffer has never been that adventurous, but that’s about to change. Wanting to impress her ex-boyfriend, Britt convinces best friend, Korbie, to take a trekking trip with her. But when a freak storm leaves the girls stranded they seek shelter in a cabin, where they find two knights in shining armour. Or so they think.
Britt quickly realises that the girls need to get off the mountain, fast. In exchange for her life, she is forced to guide the boys down, and as they set out on a harrowing journey through the cold and snow, Britt realises the only way to escape with her life is to pretend she is on their side. But is gorgeous, sexy Mason an enemy or an ally? Tension mounts, and it’s only a matter of time before things turn deadly . . .
Dark and adrenaline-filled, Black Ice will have you on the edge of your seat right until the final twist!

Worth a read
I really enjoyed reading about the characters and trying to discover their underlying motives, however as the story moved along, I thought it become a tad unbelievable.
The half-way point of the book also let it down, and I felt this section to be a bit of a slog, especially after such a fast paced start. The ending however did gain momentum which gets this book points again.
Overall, this book is worth a read.

Yes and no
The characters and their motives intrigued me and I couldn't wait to find out the truth however, even though at first the plot captivated me, I thought it became a little far fetched throughout the book.
Black Ice's tempo was fast and engaging at both the beginning and at the end however, I felt that during the middle of the book it dragged somewhat.
Overall, it was an acceptable book to read.

Kept me intrigued
Ingredients
1 cup water
2 tspn salt
90g unsalted butter chopped and kept cold
150g gluten free flour Plus 1/2 cup extra for kneeding
2g xanthan gum
2 free range eggs
Directions
1
Preheat oven to 200C
2
In a heavy based saucepan combine the water, salt and butter.
3
Bring to a simmer and add the flour and Xanthan gum. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon. Lower temperature and continue to cook until pastry comes away from the sides and is well combined. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
4
Whisk the eggs to combine and add half the egg mixture slowly, incorporating fully before adding the final half. If the mixture is a dough texture when you add in the first half, you may not need to rest of the eggs mixture.
5
Turn out onto a surface on which you have placed a further ½ cup gluten free flour and knead until shiny. Try to incorporate as little flour as possible so the pastry does not go crumbly.
6
Chill pastry then using a rolling pin roll the pastry between two pieces of baking paper greased on both sides. Roll to half a centimetre thick and place in pie tins.
7
Properties: browns beautifully, has a nice crispness and holds in moisture. Has a nice potato undertone which is very pleasant. Has a great shelf life, up to 5 days in fridge without going mouldy.
8
Note: You could add 2 teaspoons of xylitol or coconut sugar and make a sweet pastry for fruit pies.
