  • Amazing and a must buy

    As a mum of 4, I have gone through so many sterilisers! And never once have I tried a product as thorough as this! I loved that the bottles were dry meaning I didn’t have to worry about that gross slime texture that builds up on other sterilisers! I highly recommend!

  • Wish I’d had this before

    I received the portable mini UV steriliser. This is a game changer if your child loves their dummy. It’s such a great size, I can easily pop it in the baby bag or even my hand bag and be assured my bub is using a clean and sterilised dummy wherever we go.   • A handy addition to my baby bag!

    I was lucky enough to be chosen to trial and review the New Beginnings tPortable Mini UV Steriliser. It's such a handy portable device, I honestly don't know how I lived without it until now! Amazing for when you're out and about! Gives you the peace of mind you need that anything you drop onto the ground etc can be quickly and easily sterilised and is safe again to use. What a great invention!

  • Portable, Quick and Easy

    I'm fortunate enough to get the opportunity to review New Beginnings 4-in-1 Mini Steriliser from MoM. It's compact and small, easy to operate, no need to pop in the microwave or to add water, and everything is done in 3 minutes. With 8000 hour UV life, I can safely say that this steriliser will still working long after my baby doesn't need it anymore.

    The small size makes it easy to carry it in the nappy bag when going out. It's also easy to use, just open, pop the dummy inside, press the button, and wait. No hassle and fuss. The first time I was testing it, it was tough to open, need a little bit extra strength. But afterwards, it's easy to twist it. It needs two AAA battery, which is convenient. No need to bring extra cable to charge it. It's one of my must bring item when taking the kids out. I would definitely recommend this to all parents.

    The New Beginnings Portable Mini UV Steriliser is a nifty little device that’s light, compact and easy to use. With a touch of a button, it sterilises bubs dummy and teats in just minutes and kills 99.9% of germs and bacteria. The best part is it doesn’t require any water or steam, fully operated with a battery and is non-toxic, BPA free, UVA resistant and leaves no odours. I don’t have to worry about knowing when it finishes as the light will turn off once it’s complete.

    Safe to say, there’s no longer worry when my Bub drops her bottle, teether toy or dummy when out and about, which she does way too often. I only wish I had this sooner with my first born. No more running to the nearest tap or parents room or carrying clean spares. This product is so efficient, practical, time saving and quiet to use. I definitely recommend this!

  • Super handy when you’re out and about

    The portable steriliser has been great when we’re out and about. It’s small and compact and gives you piece of mind that you’ve got a clean pacifier especially when it hard to find somewhere to wash them. I typically always carry 2 pacifiers when out, as it takes a little while to sterilise this works perfectly. It’s also at a fairly accessible price point for peace of mind that things are clean. It only accommodates one pacifier at a time. I also imagine that it may not fit some pacifier shapes. I typically use advent pacifiers which fit perfectly.

    Love love love this UV Steriliser! So easy to use and multiple settings which makes sterilising all your baby products super simple.

    Favourite feature is the ability to sterilise and dry in the same cycle. No more drying bottles after sterilising. Steriliser also has a storage feature to keep the items in a sterile environment for up to 72hrs

    Because it’s UV no water require which means no weekly descaling. Just a wipe after use and a filter change ever 6 months

  • PERFECT For Sensory Toys!

    Sensory bands and toys are something that has always concerned me when it comes to germs- they get dropped on the floor and end up straight in my little ones mouth! Not only this, but they are constantly being played with. Finally I feel like I have a device which comfortably fits all our fidget items and sterilises these beloved toys in just minutes- meaning that my son isn’t without them for long if needed! It’s just so easy to use and I recommend it to all parents with little one’s who are attached to sensory gadgets! One of my little ones in particular has really low immunity, which means that keeping his things germ free gives him a far greater chance of staying well and I absolutely LOVE the added peace of mind this brings me!

  • From Birth To Beyond!

    I currently have three little ones using bottles which makes the size of the ‘New Beginnings 2 in 1 UV Steriliser and Dryer’ an absolute DREAM to use! Although it looks incredibly sleek and compact I can fit multiple bottles inside with the greatest of ease. As a mum of eight I love being able to use it across all ages, from bottles to sippy cups to toothbrushes! It’s not a device that gets outgrown with age which makes it a really useful as well as practical item to invest in. Oh my goodness and the peace of mind when it comes to avoiding germs is priceless! I love the confidence I feel when using it and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to add a level of care for their family- I should also mention that it is unbelievably easy to use and whisper quiet whilst running too. It is beautifully designed, not just in terms of aesthetics, but I can tell that it has been built to last- which is really important to me as this is something that gets used everyday!   • A must have for the baby bag!

    Great little unit that is portable and efficient, I found cleaning bub’s dummies a breeze on the go. Due to the size there isn’t much else that can be sterilised other than teats etc but any bigger then it wouldn’t be as space friendly - just a thought that came to mind when I dropped my son’s spoon while out! At first impression it doesn’t look hard wearing but upon use I felt confident that it did the job. All in all a great product!

  • Amazing portable UV steriliser!

    This portable steriliser is amazing I wish I had one 2 babies ago! So glad I got to try it this time round! It’s super quiet and easy to use. So small which is perfect for the nappy bag! But big enough to fit a dummy or teat! Such a lifesaver when you are out and about! I now consider this item to be a must in every mums baby bag!

  • I don’t know how I’ve lived without this!

    Wow! I was so very excited to be able to review the New Beginnings 2-in-1 UV Steriliser & Dryer. I have never owned a steriliser before, even though I am on my second baby. I have always relied on the stovetop method which takes foreeeever and means I have to stay in the kitchen while the water boils (I’m so sleep deprived and have forgotten about it before and left the stove running!).

    This UV steriliser is not only a time saver and means I can tend to my children while it works its magic, but is quiet, easy to use and effective. I’m also not wasting water or gas everyday!

    I have a 3 month old so keeping his dummies, toys and bottles sterilised is of the upmost importance for me. I was pleased to find that although compact, the steriliser had enough room for my pumping equipment as well as dummies. It takes only 11 minutes to run a sterilise cycle, or if I want everything dry as well, only an extra 40 mins. I can then keep everything in there until I’m ready to use it again. Set and forget!

    The bonus with this type of sterilisation is that I can put things in there that I wouldn’t be able to with conventional methods, such as hard toys, cutlery and even my mobile phone! Especially considering the current covid situation as well as being winter time, the more germs I can get rid of, the better.

    The only con for me was finding bench space to keep it (although it’s quite compact so wasn’t too hard) and the only improvement I can think of is that the lights on the control panel are a little dim to see during daylight hours. But everything else about this product has been phenomenal! I truly don’t know how I’ve gone so long without one of these, and I will be recommending it to every new mum I can! At the current price point, I think it is well worth it for peace of mind and efficiency, especially considering I now use it daily. Thanks so much for letting me be part of this trial!

    I loved it, it was a breeze to use and I felt confident that it had done its job properly. It was nice and compact so could easily take anywhere. It also looks nice, it's not heavy which is great when you already have heaps to lug around in the nappy bag anyway.

  • Simply the breast

    I would say that this tiny package really impressed this little lady. I opened and found the instructions easy to follow.

    I found myself not stressing as much about ensuring cleaning and sterilising so seamless,

    I had my bestie over and asked her if she had seen one like this on the market and she was converted. You always want the best for your children. I also am OCD when coming to cleanliness and the BPA Free guarantee. After all the technology at our fingertips - there had to be a way - and it was this fantastic product.

    I am so impressed and would recommend to any future, parent or guardian.

  • Very handy steriliser!

    I got to try the 2 in 1 steriliser and dryer and I am VERY happy with it! The steriliser looks bulky but once you lift it you won’t believe how light it is! Can be moved around with only one hand - so handy!

    Super easy to use, it starts with just pushing a button, no complicated instructions, hence no waste of time!

    Buzz prompts when cycle has finished and the good thing is bottles can be kept sterile inside until next use.

    All areas are accessible for cleaning/wiping, again no waste of time cleaning tricky corners.

    Love that different items can be sterilised as the sterilisation process is with UV lamp, which also makes it easy to fit any brand or size of bottles within the specified heigh (170.2 mm).

    Happy with the UV lamp as it lasts for 18 months aprox and replacement can be found on different shops (I just had a quick look online). This model comes with two filters recommended to be replaced every 6 months - this is definitely a plus!

    I would recommend this product not only because of both the sterilising and dryer functionality, but also the time it saves specially when busy with the little one: every second counts!

  • A nifty little must have for any mum

    How cool is this, such an awesome device to carry with you for a quick sterilisation out and about with zero noise! It was so easy to use and understand, and I honestly am so in love with how little it is and the amazing options to use any baby accessory with it really.

  • Game changer!

    This UV steriliser is a complete game changer! I absolutely love that I can sterilise and dry my bottles and Sippy cups in one machine and it’s all done so fast! Just 11 minutes the sterilise! And I also love that I can do these two options separately too. This machine has literally halved the amount of time I spend sterilising and drying bottles.

    I also love how stylish this machine is. I have no issues with leaving this steriliser on my bench because it looks fantastic and matches my kitchen perfectly.

    The 72hr sterile storage is also so handy so I always have bottles ready to go.

    I cannot thank you enough, I wish I’d known about these machines earlier!

  • Genie in a box!

    Don't we all just dread the sterilisation and drying part of the baby bottles, feeding accessories, Breast pumps and TOYS!!!!

    I am constantly worried about the germs and bacteria on the breast pump, teethers and toys etc.

    "The New Beginnings 2 in 1 UV steriliser and Dryer " is such a life saviour for me and my partner. I feel it is a Must-have item for all parents from the ages birth and beyond. I feel so confident and reassured for the sterilisation part of my children's feeders and teethers etc.

    I would cringe at the wet baby bottles and dread draining and emptying the steam water build up in the pacifier or straws of the sippy cups.

    Well, this wonderful steriliser is a Genie in a box!

    It is lightweight and stylish. Doesn't look bulky or ugly on your kitchen counter. As it does not have any association of water or steam you could also place it in the nursery or your room at a safe space out of reach from the little ones.

    I love the fact that it works for multiple purposes apart from just the baby bottles and feeding accessories. Dries up the items and keeps them sterilised in the container for upto 72 hours!

    Just can't appreciate it enough!

  • Great on the go tool

    New beginning steriliser is great for on the go when you need to quickly sterilise a dummy or pacifier that may have hit the ground on the travels. It saves having to do it later and have it easily forgotten (because mums are so busy anyway) and is small enough that it is easy to leave in the bottom of the pram or car.

    It takes 6-8 minutes to sterilise which is super fast and just needs 2c batteries so no mess, no water, no extra cleaning. It’s all done by UV light.

‘Trust Your Intuition’: How To Advocate For Your Child In Hospital

Mother’s instinct is a funny thing. At home, we trust it without question. But put us in a hospital setting with an unwell child, surrounded by doctors, nurses and monitors, and suddenly we start doubting ourselves.

What if I’m overreacting?
What if I’ve got it wrong?

So we stay quiet, even when we know something just isn’t right with our child. I’ve been there myself – when my usually ‘tough’ son was doubled over with stomach pain. I was told in the emergency department that it probably wasn’t his appendix. But I knew he wouldn’t have begged me to take him to hospital unless it was serious. Because I know him better than anyone. Turns out, it was appendicitis.

It’s a really common place for parents to land. You’re grateful for the care your child is getting, but at the same time, you feel this huge responsibility to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Here’s the thing though: that instinct you’re feeling? It matters more than you might think.

Why your gut feeling matters more than you realise

According to Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital, Leticia Jackson, parents bring something to the hospital that no test or machine ever could.

“Parents often say they ‘just know’ when something isn’t quite right with their child, and in a hospital, that gut feeling is incredibly valuable,” she explains.

While medical teams rely on observations, tests and equipment, parents know the little details. The way your child usually smiles. How they react when they’re tired. What’s normal for them.

So when something feels “off”, even if everything looks okay on paper, it can actually be an early warning sign.

“When parents trust those instincts and speak up, this creates a powerful partnership that can sometimes catch a problem before it becomes an emergency,” Leticia says.

Worried about speaking up? You’re not alone

A lot of parents hesitate about advocating for their child.

You don’t want to come across as difficult. You don’t want to question the people caring for your child. And sometimes, you just don’t feel confident enough to push the issue.

Leticia gets it.

“It is completely understandable for parents to feel hesitant,” she says. “No one wants to be seen as difficult or to second-guess the hardworking people caring for their child.”

But here’s a helpful way to look at it: you’re not challenging the medical team, you’re helping them.

Parents are the constant. Staff change shifts, care for multiple patients, and rely on snapshots of information. You’re there the whole time, noticing the subtle changes.

“Our medical team doesn’t view a concerned parent as overreactive, but as a partner,” Leticia explains. “Your voice matters.”

Remember, we know our children better than anyone.

What to do if you’re worried: the Raise It process

If you’re in a NSW public hospital or health service and you’re worried about you or your child’s condition getting worse, there is a clear process you can follow called Raise It.

Raise It is designed to help patients, carers and family members get help fast if they’re worried about a change in their loved one’s condition.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Talk: Start by speaking to a nurse, midwife, doctor or health worker about your concerns.
  2. Ask: Still worried? Ask to speak to the nurse or midwife in charge and request a Clinical Review.
  3. Call: If you’re still concerned, you can escalate further using the Raise It process to get urgent attention from a senior health worker.

You don’t need medical knowledge. You don’t need to be certain. If you feel something isn’t right, or your child is getting worse, Raise It. You just need to speak up.

What should you actually look out for?

Sometimes it’s not one big, obvious sign. It can be small, subtle changes that just don’t sit right.

Things like:

  • Changes in breathing (fast, laboured or noisy)
  • Skin looking pale, mottled, or developing unusual rashes
  • Your child being unusually drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
  • Confusion or behaviour that’s out of character
  • Pain that isn’t improving with treatment
  • Or simply that feeling that your child is getting worse

And sometimes, it’s just that gut feeling you can’t explain.

That’s enough.

“You are helping us, not bothering us”

If there’s one message Leticia wants parents to take away, it’s that you aren’t bothering the medical team, you’re helping them.

“In my years as a Nurse Unit Manager, I can say with absolute certainty that many critical changes in a child’s condition have been identified first by a parent. While our clinical staff are highly skilled at performing regular observations and interpreting data, parents are the only constant presence who truly know their child’s baseline behaviour, personality, and what is normal for them.

“I have seen numerous instances where a parent’s insistence that their child is “just not themselves” – despite vital signs appearing relatively stable – has prompted a deeper clinical review that uncovered everything from early signs of sepsis to a life-threatening respiratory crisis.”

The Raise It process exists because healthcare teams know how important parents are in keeping children safe.

“Speaking up doesn’t mean you don’t trust the team,” she says. “It means you’re partnering with us to make sure nothing gets missed.”

And if you’re still worried about being judged?

“Whether your concern turns out to be something or nothing, your instinct to raise it is always valid.”

  • Yes and amen to this article ! I agree with always follow your gut, you know your child like no one else does. In fact you are your child’s expert and should never stop advocating for them or speaking up. Sometimes professionals are very good in waving concerns away, all it takes is a human who listens

  • Even as a healthcare professional, when I took my soon to the ED when I was concerned, I felt awkward about speaking up, worried I was making a big deal out of nothing (even though i would never tjink this about a patient’s family if the roles were reversed). The message in this article is so important. Always stick to your guns. Always speak up and advocate for your kids – they can’t do it for themselves.

  • And honestly, some medical staff are idiots. I vividly remember the night two doctors huddled over my son’s lung x-rays. I hadn’t been allowed to accompany him to have them taken as I was pregnant. They finally told me solemnly that they were preparing to do emergency surgery as there was something in his lungs – “we don’t know what it is, but it’s definitely man made”. I took one look at the x-rays and asked if they’d taken off the battery packs for his cochlear implants, which were pinned to the back of his shirt, before the x-ray. And of course they hadn’t, and of course that’s what appeared to be in his lungs. Honestly!

  • You should never second guess yourself when it comes to yours or your childs health- or anyones for that matter. Go with your thoughts. It is natural to want to protect a loved one especially when it comes to health situations, and the feeling you get when you think you didnt do enough to advocate or fight for them…it is not a kind or nice way to feel. Many people have ended up being heartbroken and picking up pieces for years because of feeling they didnt do enough.

  • A very good and informative article. I have read so many stories about mums just knowing when things are not right and demanding second and third opinions until they got the right answer. Sometimes mums just know. It is our job as care takers of our families. Listen to your gut!

  • Years ago, I spoke up for my 14-year-old daughter, but my concerns weren’t fully listened to. I’ve always wished I had pushed harder. She was sent home without much testing, and two days later, she passed away.
    So, if you ever have concerns—no matter how minor—please speak up and keep advocating. Trust your instincts; they are there for a reason.

  • This is so important for parents to know how to raise it further if they don’t think their child is receiving the medical support they need! I know this article refers to the NSW system but other systems have similar procedures just with different names. I know in QLD it’s called Ryan’s Rule.

  • It’s so important to follow your gut instincts and express your concerns indeed. I have never hesitated to advocate for my children in various situations and I don’t care what other people think about it. Not all doctors and medical staff appreciate it when you question them, I’ve experienced that it may result in angry indignant responses.

  • How true this is! While nurses and doctors are the medical professionals doing their job on the daily, we know our children better than anyone and what is ‘normal’ for them. I would always speak up if I had noticed any changes in my child’s health and encourage other parents to do so too. No question is silly!

  • This really is such an important issue and a good topic to discuss with people, I am often surprised that people are worried about being judged. This is not something I care about; the priority is for the care and health of everyone is my family. Parents know their children and need to work with health professionals for the best outcomes for their children.

  • This is such an important issue to raise, and no one should ever feel ashamed, nervous or that they are being OTT for advocating for their kids, themselves or loves ones in hospital. In QLD we have Ryan’s Rule. A three step process where your concern will be escalated if they believe the patients condition isn’t improving or is worsening.

  • I have never been afraid to advocate for my children and partner and extended family and also friends. It is so important to listen and to trust intuition. When people have not listened, I have persevered and kept on with insisting on care and making sure they truly listened and took action.
