  • Changed my life!

I have been a Weight Watchers Online member now for 18 months. I lost 26kg in the first 10 months and have maintained my weight ever since. I personally think it is the easiest weight loss program I have ever done (and I have done a lot!) I find the online option perfect for me, I am quite driven and self motivated so I didnt need to go to meetings to have success, though I do know many people who need the support of meetings. Weight Watchers is flexible enough for you to choose whatever works for you.

this program is fantastic in every way. the only downfall is having to count calories and keep track. it was easy to follow the program, it helped me to lose those pesky kilos and i learnt healthy eating habits as well as what foods are high in calories and what arent. if you dont feel confident going it alone on a diet then this is the program for you

  • good but the points system takes a little getting used to

I prefer a program like Weight Watchers than programs that provide food for you simply because you’re learning to prepare your own food using low fat and low sugar options. I feel that with the other programs you aren’t actually learning as you go so once you stop ordering their foods, you won’t know how to keep the weight off.

  • SUCESS,SUCCESS,SUCCESS

After trying unsuccessfully for years to eat healthily & lose weight I turned to weight watchers for support. I found the point system easy to follow & it meant that I could have a small treat occassionally without feeling guilty. I have a long way to go to lose the weight that I need to but with the support of weight watchers I know that this is possible...I'm losing on average of 2kg per week & as yet havent had a week where I have gained weight since I started the weight watchers programme....Thanks weight watchers for giving me the confidence that I needed

  • Long term changes for long term success

With weight watchers I learned how to change my bad habits into good habits. By focusing on eating plenty of nutritious food I was always satisfied, rather than feeling hungry and deprived. Previous diets had concentrated on 'not doing this' and 'not doing that' but weight watchers is completely empowering - I can have a small chocolate and I can enjoy it more than eating a whole block because I see the bigger picture now. Lots of small changes add together to a total change in lifestyle and a healthier me!

  • A good way to learn.

I enjoyed Weight Watchers Online once I got used to it. The daily points were easy to keep track of online and I liked that you could save your meals for future reference once they were entered. It is a great tool to help you learn how to manage your food choices and portion sizes. I recommend it.

  • Great for special dietary requirements

Having coeliac disease it can be difficult to follow set diets as they don't always cater for gluten free eating. Weight watchers is so flexible with how you make up your points each day. I lost 14kgs in around 5 months. I am now pregnant but will be straight back to WW once bub arrives. You can even follow it while breast feeding and the iPhone app makes it so simple to track your eating at all times.

  • I did Weight watchers online... AHM Paid!

If your BMI is high enough you can claim your Weight Watchers through your health insurance! I used a deal through MOM and AHM paid for a 3 month sign up.

The food was amazing, the app's very informative (use the recipe finder to find a healthy version of whatever meal you are after). Enjoy a glass of wine or cheese a few times a week.

It's breastfeeding friendly!!!! The program knows a BF mumma has additional needs and it allows for that. Even better, it allows for part time feeding, for when you might be weaning or introducing solids.

The downside is that you need to be able to plan ahead - it's tough going for a new mum, but once you are in the swing of things it's great. We used Skinnytaste.com as a backup - it gives you the WW points per serve!!

  • Weight Watchers?

After reading the mixed reviews by Mom’s community members on Weight Watchers I am going to join Weight Watchers? It sounds like the points and on line tools are key in losing and maintaining weight. An option where I can track my success is a positive. Hopefully there are motivators too.

  • Better than meetings, sort of

For me, going to meetings was a bit too embarrassing a prospect for me so the online program was perfect. I didn't like the overemphasis of WW products though, and support wasn't offered really. That being said, the WW propoints system has worked so far for me. I've lost 5 kg so far (which for me is great! I'm more likely to put on 5 kgs lol). So it's okay if you keep in mind it's just a tool to help, not a be all and end all.

  • Weight Watchers Pros and Cons

Weight Watchers is only a tool - if you are not ready mentally to lose weight, it will not happen. I am a fan of this type of tool, as it can be embarrassing sitting in a meeting, and times may clash with your schedule. The thing I dislike is it is big business, and the push on their products is a little OTT. Read the labels, as there is often cheaper and healthier alternatives out there. The online support of other members is awesome, and online friendships can help you stay on track. Good luck all, I have lost 33kg.

  • No support with the online program

I thought I'd come back now that it's been some time since signing up to do an update. Whilst I eventually got used to the points system I would still prefer a calorie system or something easier to use whilst you're at the supermarket rather than having to look everything up back at home. I found there was no support at all with the online program and it just became a task of logging in and tracking my food; nothing too motivational or inspirational about it. I've since done another online program which is completely different and have lost 13kg very easily and now maintaining my weight. WW seems to work for some but it wasn't for me. I can only assume attending the meetings etc would make a difference in terms of the support aspect.

  • It's a win!

I've been trying to lose weight for years and have tried almost everything. I was hesitant about joining Weight Watchers because of the high cost and fees and then the high cost of their products in supermarkets. While they offer incentive to lose weight and support you through your journey, like everything, the choice of succeeding begins with your own attitudes towards food, diets and exercise. I think weight loss is more to do with emotional health and once this is addressed then being motivated to find the time to manage your diet and exercise is more easily achieved. I think the theory behind Weight Watchers is great and it has offered many people success in the key to developing healthy habits. But I think it is too expensive.

Reliable option for those who are looking to a healthy diet and loosing weight. Calorie count helps to be balanced on diet and organise daily eating habits. Also that there is no compromise on the taste and flavours. I would strongly recommend this product for those who are health concious.

  • It's ok works for some but not for me

Weight watchers is good. It has worked for so many of many of my friends. Unfortunate this really didn't fit into my lifestyle. This program did not work for me it is a great program. It has worked for thousands. I'm just not into doing it this way. I did however find a different program that worked for me so it wasn't from. Lack of trying. I just found the counting etc too hard and I didn't hVe time to do it.. With four kids and a hubby weight watchers wasn't for us. But I do recommend for others to give a go as it is proven to work

I did Weight Watchers a few years ago and lost 23 kg in 7 months. I found it so easy to stick to as you don't only eat Weight Watchers food/recipes. As long as you know what is going in to what you are eating you can make healthy choices.

  • The System Works

There is no denying that if you follow the weight watchers plan, you will lose weight. That's not to say that it's always easy because life can definitely get in the way of weight loss. For example, I'm now in the process of losing my baby weight. This time around I'm not signed up to Weight Watchers but I am applying the principles learned when I used them last. Prior to pregnancy I had lost 19Kg and kept it off for 2 years thanks to Weight Watches.

The reason that I haven't re-signed with them is because their logical program can still be applied all these years later. Okay, so the "points" system has changed a bit since I last did it, BUT the underlying principles of weight loss remain the same. I attribute the lessons I've learned at Weight Watchers in the past to my success in weight loss so far this year.

I prefer a program like Weight Watchers than programs that provide food for you simply because you're learning to prepare your own food using low fat and low sugar options. I feel that with the other programs you aren't actually learning as you go so once you stop ordering their foods, you won't know how to keep the weight off.

  • pricey

It obviously depends on the meeting you attend. The motivational talks at my meeting are short but interesting and relevent. There isnt much real personal support given and it is very hard to work the online weight watchers. The main obstacle is the price definitely not worth the money as other web sites offer the same more expanded features and are free to use.I use my pedometer every day and with information from meeting found it did so much more than measure steps.

Mother’s instinct is a funny thing. At home, we trust it without question. But put us in a hospital setting with an unwell child, surrounded by doctors, nurses and monitors, and suddenly we start doubting ourselves.

What if I’m overreacting?
What if I’ve got it wrong?

So we stay quiet, even when we know something just isn’t right with our child. I’ve been there myself – when my usually ‘tough’ son was doubled over with stomach pain. I was told in the emergency department that it probably wasn’t his appendix. But I knew he wouldn’t have begged me to take him to hospital unless it was serious. Because I know him better than anyone. Turns out, it was appendicitis.

It’s a really common place for parents to land. You’re grateful for the care your child is getting, but at the same time, you feel this huge responsibility to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Here’s the thing though: that instinct you’re feeling? It matters more than you might think.

Why your gut feeling matters more than you realise

According to Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital, Leticia Jackson, parents bring something to the hospital that no test or machine ever could.

“Parents often say they ‘just know’ when something isn’t quite right with their child, and in a hospital, that gut feeling is incredibly valuable,” she explains.

Leticia Jackson, Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager, Canterbury Hospital

While medical teams rely on observations, tests and equipment, parents know the little details. The way your child usually smiles. How they react when they’re tired. What’s normal for them.

So when something feels “off”, even if everything looks okay on paper, it can actually be an early warning sign.

“When parents trust those instincts and speak up, this creates a powerful partnership that can sometimes catch a problem before it becomes an emergency,” Leticia says.

Worried about speaking up? You’re not alone

A lot of parents hesitate about advocating for their child.

You don’t want to come across as difficult. You don’t want to question the people caring for your child. And sometimes, you just don’t feel confident enough to push the issue.

Leticia gets it.

“It is completely understandable for parents to feel hesitant,” she says. “No one wants to be seen as difficult or to second-guess the hardworking people caring for their child.”

But here’s a helpful way to look at it: you’re not challenging the medical team, you’re helping them.

Parents are the constant. Staff change shifts, care for multiple patients, and rely on snapshots of information. You’re there the whole time, noticing the subtle changes.

“Our medical team doesn’t view a concerned parent as overreactive, but as a partner,” Leticia explains. “Your voice matters.”

Remember, we know our children better than anyone.

What to do if you’re worried: the Raise It process

If you’re in a NSW public hospital or health service and you’re worried about you or your child’s condition getting worse, there is a clear process you can follow called Raise It.

Raise It is designed to help patients, carers and family members get help fast if they’re worried about a change in their loved one’s condition.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Talk: Start by speaking to a nurse, midwife, doctor or health worker about your concerns.
  2. Ask: Still worried? Ask to speak to the nurse or midwife in charge and request a Clinical Review.
  3. Call: If you’re still concerned, you can escalate further using the Raise It process to get urgent attention from a senior health worker.

You don’t need medical knowledge. You don’t need to be certain. If you feel something isn’t right, or your child is getting worse, Raise It. You just need to speak up.

What should you actually look out for?

Sometimes it’s not one big, obvious sign. It can be small, subtle changes that just don’t sit right.

Things like:

  • Changes in breathing (fast, laboured or noisy)
  • Skin looking pale, mottled, or developing unusual rashes
  • Your child being unusually drowsy, floppy, or hard to wake
  • Confusion or behaviour that’s out of character
  • Pain that isn’t improving with treatment
  • Or simply that feeling that your child is getting worse

And sometimes, it’s just that gut feeling you can’t explain.

That’s enough.

“You are helping us, not bothering us”

If there’s one message Leticia wants parents to take away, it’s that you aren’t bothering the medical team, you’re helping them.

“In my years as a Nurse Unit Manager, I can say with absolute certainty that many critical changes in a child’s condition have been identified first by a parent. While our clinical staff are highly skilled at performing regular observations and interpreting data, parents are the only constant presence who truly know their child’s baseline behaviour, personality, and what is normal for them.

“I have seen numerous instances where a parent’s insistence that their child is “just not themselves” – despite vital signs appearing relatively stable – has prompted a deeper clinical review that uncovered everything from early signs of sepsis to a life-threatening respiratory crisis.”

The Raise It process exists because healthcare teams know how important parents are in keeping children safe.

“Speaking up doesn’t mean you don’t trust the team,” she says. “It means you’re partnering with us to make sure nothing gets missed.”

And if you’re still worried about being judged?

“Whether your concern turns out to be something or nothing, your instinct to raise it is always valid.”

  • Even as a healthcare professional, when I took my soon to the ED when I was concerned, I felt awkward about speaking up, worried I was making a big deal out of nothing (even though i would never tjink this about a patient’s family if the roles were reversed). The message in this article is so important. Always stick to your guns. Always speak up and advocate for your kids – they can’t do it for themselves.

  • And honestly, some medical staff are idiots. I vividly remember the night two doctors huddled over my son’s lung x-rays. I hadn’t been allowed to accompany him to have them taken as I was pregnant. They finally told me solemnly that they were preparing to do emergency surgery as there was something in his lungs – “we don’t know what it is, but it’s definitely man made”. I took one look at the x-rays and asked if they’d taken off the battery packs for his cochlear implants, which were pinned to the back of his shirt, before the x-ray. And of course they hadn’t, and of course that’s what appeared to be in his lungs. Honestly!

  • We need more articles like this one. It is important for us to advocate for ourselves and our loved ones in any situation and work with professionals.

  • I have learned many times to always listen to your gut and speak up when you don’t think something is right. This article was a great read, our kids are our world and if we don’t feel they are getting the right help, and we feel it, we need to speak up.

  • You should never second guess yourself when it comes to yours or your childs health- or anyones for that matter. Go with your thoughts. It is natural to want to protect a loved one especially when it comes to health situations, and the feeling you get when you think you didnt do enough to advocate or fight for them…it is not a kind or nice way to feel. Many people have ended up being heartbroken and picking up pieces for years because of feeling they didnt do enough.

  • A very good and informative article. I have read so many stories about mums just knowing when things are not right and demanding second and third opinions until they got the right answer. Sometimes mums just know. It is our job as care takers of our families. Listen to your gut!

  • Years ago, I spoke up for my 14-year-old daughter, but my concerns weren’t fully listened to. I’ve always wished I had pushed harder. She was sent home without much testing, and two days later, she passed away.
So, if you ever have concerns—no matter how minor—please speak up and keep advocating. Trust your instincts; they are there for a reason.

  • This is so important for parents to know how to raise it further if they don’t think their child is receiving the medical support they need! I know this article refers to the NSW system but other systems have similar procedures just with different names. I know in QLD it’s called Ryan’s Rule.

  • It’s so important to follow your gut instincts and express your concerns indeed. I have never hesitated to advocate for my children in various situations and I don’t care what other people think about it. Not all doctors and medical staff appreciate it when you question them, I’ve experienced that it may result in angry indignant responses.

  • How true this is! While nurses and doctors are the medical professionals doing their job on the daily, we know our children better than anyone and what is ‘normal’ for them. I would always speak up if I had noticed any changes in my child’s health and encourage other parents to do so too. No question is silly!

  • This really is such an important issue and a good topic to discuss with people, I am often surprised that people are worried about being judged. This is not something I care about; the priority is for the care and health of everyone is my family. Parents know their children and need to work with health professionals for the best outcomes for their children.

  • This is such an important issue to raise, and no one should ever feel ashamed, nervous or that they are being OTT for advocating for their kids, themselves or loves ones in hospital. In QLD we have Ryan’s Rule. A three step process where your concern will be escalated if they believe the patients condition isn’t improving or is worsening.

  • I have never been afraid to advocate for my children and partner and extended family and also friends. It is so important to listen and to trust intuition. When people have not listened, I have persevered and kept on with insisting on care and making sure they truly listened and took action.
