If there’s a school item that works as hard as your kids do through the year, it’s their bags and backpacks. So naturally, it’s a purchase you want to get right.

School backpacks carry everything from pencil cases and lunch boxes to iPads, artwork and (very) expensive laptops, so getting your hands on a reliable one is critical. But we all know kids are fussy little creatures when it comes to their accessories, and balancing functionality and durability with the good looks kids want doesn’t always come easy.

Well, fret not, fellow parents. We’ve scoured the country and dug up the most practical and good-looking school bags and put them in one handy spot for you. You’re welcome.

How to choose a school backpack

  • Comfort is key - For maximum comfort, you’ll want school backpacks to be the right size for your child, not too big or heavy when filled. Plus they should have padded, adjustable straps and multiple pockets for distributing the weight evenly.
  • Look for adjustable straps - Not only do kids grow fast, but the contents of their school bags will vary from day to day. Adjustable straps give you the ability to loosen up overfilled bags and adapt to growth spurts.
  • The right size is critical - While very young kids usually only need space to pack a lunch box and change of clothes, older kids carry a LOT of gear and need adequate room for it all. From the later stages of primary school and into high school, ensure school bags can fit A4 folders and a laptop, and look for options with multiple compartments including a holder for water bottles.
  • Look for secure closures - For older kids, you’ll want to ensure their equipment and important schoolwork are secure; for young kids, you want to make sure nothing will fall out and wind up in the dreaded Lost Property bin.

What to pack in school bags?

Until your kids are older and more independent (which often doesn’t come until later in primary school), they’re likely to need a little help packing their school bags. Essentials include a drink bottle, a change of clothes in the younger years (because accidents DO happen), a lunch box and school books.

How heavy should a school backpack be?

According to current guidelines, a child’s school bag should not weigh more than 10-20% of a child’s body weight. Any heavier than this causes a great deal of strain on growing bodies. Always look for lightweight school backpacks with multiple pockets that help disperse the weight well.

  • Thanks for the help!! So many options I love the personalised bags

  • It’s always a compromise with the kids because they must have what they are into of late, Minecraft or Roblox etc and then we have to find the right price and the right setup. The article shows some great options and things that need to be considered. A great read.

  • I work with special needs children and I am often amazed and how heavy one particular childs school bag is. I have trouble lifting it myself and often I will not allow this boy to wear his school bag. Its as if some parents just dont think about the weight at all.

  • If we can only choose a school bag for my son I would get one from Alimasy. The prints are unique and very attractive. I also love the size as they are just enough for maybe an extra pair of change clothes and some school supplies. They can also be a good bag for Daycare.

  • Montii Co are our favorite!
we love their drink bottles too, love how all the lids fit different size bottles, love that one base can be used for hot or cold, their school bags are great quality too and we love all the different designs to chose from so much choice.

  • I wish I had a choice for my kids school but we are forced to get the schools own bag, which would be okay if they lasted longer than they do. They are $75 and my Son has gone through 3 of them. Luckily my daughter isn’t so rough on hers and its lasted 2 years.

  • So many backpacks but we have to go with the school one

  • These backpacks look so much better then the one my miss 4 is currently using. Think I may have to upgrade

  • You have to be so careful with school backpacks these days. They need to be ergonomically correct and not to be overloaded

  • Im sure I read an article on mums net or similar a few years back where it was highlighted that having your kids’ name printed large on a backpack/school bag wasnt a great idea, as there was a line of thought that it helped dodgy people trying to trick children that they were family friend who knows them, and thereby are more likely to be successfull gaining their confidence. (I dont mean a name tag inside, obviously but the kind that so many including the fab TinyMe do, where you can get ‘Tim’ or ‘Dave Durr’ printed on shoe bag/sports bag /back pack etc.) I think this is a sad fact of life now.

  • I love those Montii ones! definately will look at them for next year.

  • I think she does need to aa the kid’s parents before giving junk food for breakfast. I’d like parents to respect my decision as a parent as to whether I’d like my children to have unhealthy foods or not.

  • Thank you so much! I was literally just looking for backpacks for my little one and was a bit lost. Will be getting one of those!

  • This would have been handy to read late last year! Not at school yet but so hard to find a decent bag for daycare where essentially it is carried by the parent but needs to look cool for bubs and have compartments for daycare staff to find things!

  • So many cute options! I love the ability to personalise the bags.

  • What about how some schools only allow school logo backpacks and they are bigger than the kindy kids. But you have to jave it or its not allowed. Not even one from kmart is allowed.

  • We have to have the schools backpack

  • It’s been a while since my kids were at school. I was advised to buy ergonomically safe backpacks for their backs

  • I love the Amilasy backpacks ! For many years I had a personalized backpack on wheels for my youngest

    • Currently they’re only allowed the backpack ordered at school
