As families, we ask a lot of the family car. We want it to be stylish and roomy for growing kids, but we also need a workhorse that can fit a family-load of gear, as well as the shopping, or a plant-haul from the nursery.

One Mouths of Mums member has found this elusive unicorn, and she was lucky enough to give it a workout with her family. Liz put the MG HS Essence X to the ultimate test – a week running around with a real family.

Liz’s Favourite Features: MG HS Essence X Review

MG HS Essence X Review

Day to day family life is busy, with drop offs and pick ups of precious kiddie cargo, as well as shopping and even hardware and plant hauls. And the MG HS Essence X takes it all in stride.

Luxuriously Spacious

The value-packed MG HS Essence X has been created with growing families in mind. Both the cabin and boot have ample space for little (and longer) legs, as well as school bags, shopping and prams.

“The MG suited us well for all our running around,Liz explained. “Our local garden shop had a big sale on so I stocked the boot full of plants – it was surprising how many I was able to fit, the boot is deceptively large.

“My husband and I are both tall and we had plenty of room. The large sun roof allows so much sunlight in which also helps the cabin feel spacious. I was able to fit our pram and a week’s worth of groceries in the boot no issues.”

Safety Features

Families spend so much time in the car, from the school and sport practice during the week to shopping, day trips and sport comps on the weekends. So it’s no surprise that MG has put safety at the top of the list when launching the HS Essence X.

With a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, seven year unlimited kilometre warranty and full suite of advanced safety features there’s peace of mind every time you get behind the wheel.

“I really enjoyed the electric tailgate feature. With just a push of a button I could access the cargo area and keep my focus on the children without needing to find my keys. MG Pilot, with its lane-keep assist and blind-spot warning systems, also helped me to keep my mind on the road, not the racket in the back seat.”

Tech Savvy

MG HS MoM review

The MG HS Essence X strikes a balance between being spacious enough for a family, but still having a luxe touch so it feels like so much more than the family workhorse. With Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and colour satellite navigation, the HS keeps families connected (as do the front and rear USB ports). And as Liz discovered, it’s a pleasure to drive.

“I absolutely loved it. We do a lot of short trips all day long and it was nice to be in such comfort while doing so. The Apple car play was also great, it was nice being able to ask Siri to do things for me. It was also really easy to get the kids in and out of their car seats.

“The MG HS Essence X is packed full of value and luxury inclusions, with oodles of space for families, and it’s winning over families across Australia. “I was actually shocked when I saw the price and asked my husband when we can get one. There are so many features that I thought would have made the price sky rocket, but it’s such an affordable car.”

  • Awesome article. We bought an MG HS Essence late lastyear and omg what a dream car it has been. So much room for us as a family of four, super comfy on long trips and the heated seats are great for those long trips too ☺️

  • We don’t need another car of this size yet as I have a Mazda CX7 I love. But, we did just purchase the smaller MG 3 Auto for hubby to zip around in. I really loved the model mentioned, but we just don’t need 2 cars of that size. However, I will definitely be looking at this when I need to upgrade.

  • I’ve never heard of this brand. I’m always sceptical of new car brands as I want a car that is a brand well known to be reliable.
We recently bought a Rav4 (back in August) and love it.
We’ve always had Toyotas for cars as they’ve always been super reliable.

  • How nice a new car would be. If over $40 000 is the average price, it’s way out of my reach
