Hello!

I love donating money to charities, when I can. What I hate is the phone calls I get, asking to buy and sell raffles, etc. I always say, I donate in other ways and won’t that way. But, the other day, I saw 2 people sitting in the middle of the shopping centre collecting money for the para-olympians. I knew this and walked over to them, without them stopping me first, so I could donate a couple of dollars as I do for almost every charity, every time (it adds up) – Man!!! She started talking about the cause (I was in a rush) before telling me my donation of buying the $50 worth of raffle … I stopped and said no is there something less ..she said $25 ..and went on to talk more. I told her again, I donate a couple of dollars every time I can to as many charities as I can, and she looked at me with cold eyes, and said, cheapest is $10, with a pin. I took that. WHY can’t charities take what is offered and not WHAT THEY WANT and make you feel bad in the process. Just wrong!!! makes you not want to go back next time and donate

  • I don’t appreciate the harassing phone calls either. I’m same as you, donate when I can, what I can to who I can. Most are very happy to take whatever I give, as it should be

    • If I ever feel like someone is pressuring me to donate more than I want/can, this time I will tell them. Most definatally annoying!!

  • I hate being hounded like this. I will donate on my own accord

    • Thats exactly how it should be. Its called a donation!! Next time I should just tell them, and not feel embaressed :/

  • Sounds a shame that you couldn’t donate what you wanted. Perhaps it is easier for the charity, or perhaps they haven’t done their research. I would have thought that people go on-line if they want to do big donations, and collectors stand in shopping centres to get the smaller ones?

    • you would think :/

      • what they do not realise is they are actually putting people off by trying to do more then they can. I don’t want to go anywhere near these people again

  • Exactly – to me it’s not really a ‘Donation’ when you are dictated to as to what and how much you can donate!!! I hate the ones where you can’t give anything at all right there – but you are supposed to sign up to monthly deductions from your bank account – for an infinite term – with a complete stranger – on a street corner!! Sorry, it ain’t happening :/

  • You are absolutely right. In the past it happened something similar to me. I would have made a small donation, just once. No, they wanted my credit card details, they wanted me to commit to give a certain amount every month. I don’t want to do that. I think that this way they lose money, really!

    • Exactly!!

      • I am stunned about them wanting credit card details! :(

      • But it happens. Then they say that you can close everything when you want. But the problem is that I don’t want to start. And they don’t understand that. They say this is the way to the future. Boh!

  • Such a shame the you had this experience. Most charities do accept small to large donations and are usually appreciative. Hope it was a one off occurrence.
