A few weeks ago, Jake & I were snuggling together while he was trying to fall asleep.

“Mommy?” he asked, “Why do we have toes?”

I had to think because I honestly could not remember, and finally settled on the balance theory. I explained it to him as simply as I could, noting the way they bend when we walk and keep us from tipping over. He was quiet for nearly a minute, so I relaxed thinking I had sufficiently answered the question–probably the 400th question of that day.

“Mommy?” he asked, just as I had relaxed,”Why aren’t they one big line?”

“Why aren’t they what?”

“Why are they all separated into little sticks, and not one straight across thing that bends?”

I don’t know!! I thought.

“Because that would look weird,” I responded without much thought–I was tired.

“It wouldn’t look THIS is weird,” he replied as he raised his tiny little foot into the air and wiggled his little toes.
